    • A pouring reel for forming a long product moving at an incoming velocity into an annular coil comprises a central mast lying on a vertical axis. A cylindrical tub surrounds and cooperates with the mast to form an annular chamber, the bottom of which is closed by a coil plate. An entry pipe is arranged to deliver the product downwardly for accumulation in the chamber as a series of superimposed rings forming the annular coil. A first drive mechanism rotates the tub about the vertical axis, and a second drive mechanism rotates the mast about the same axis. The first and second drive mechanisms are operable independently of each other to thereby permit the tub and the mast to be rotated at surface velocities substantially matching the incoming velocity of the product. The tub and entry pipe may also be vertically adjustable in unison relative to the central mast and coil plate in order to maintain the free fall distance of product being delivered into the chamber at a predetermined substantially constant minimum.

    • A method of continuously rolling a ferrous workpiece (10) into a finished round (10e), comprising rolling the workpiece in successive first and second roll passes (P1, P2) at an elevated temperature of between about 650 to 1000 C, the first and second roll passes each being defined by two work rolls (12, 16) and being dimensioned to effect a combined reduction in the cross sectional area of the workpiece of at least about 20-55%, with an accompanying effective strain pattern dominated by a concentration of maximum effective strain at a central region (a) of the cross sectional area; and while the effective strain pattern remains dominated by a concentration of maximum effective strain at a central region of the cross ection, continuing to roll the workpiece in at least third and fourth consecutive roll passes (P3, P4), each of the third and fourth roll passes being defined by at least three rolls (20, 24) and being sized to effect a combined reduction in the cross sectional area of the workpiece of not more than about 4-25 %.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a product handling system using a rotating drum.
      SOLUTION: The product handling system comprises a support structure 16 defining a pair of first grooves 18a, 18b. The pair of first grooves 18a, 18b have downwardly facing open sides. Two cylindrical drums 20a, 20b are provided between the first grooves 18a, 18b corresponding thereto and a cooling floor 14. The drums 20a, 20b are rotatable, with their surfaces arranged to close the open sides of the respective first grooves 18a, 18b. The drum surfaces are formed by second grooves 22a, 22b. A product delivered from the upstream side is temporarily retained by the first grooves 18a, 18b. Thereafter, when the second grooves 22a, 22b are radially aligned to the first grooves 18a, 18b by the rotation of the drums 20a, 20b, the product is deposited in the second grooves 22a, 22b. By the continuous rotation of the drums, the product is output from the second grooves 22a, 22b to the cooling floor 14.
