    • Adhesive/adherend systems of this invention comprise a siloxane-modified adhesive component and a siloxane-modified adherend component. The siloxane-modified adhesive component is prepared by combining an epoxy resin with an organosilane ingredient, a polysiloxane resin, an amine hardener, an organometallic catalyst, a base catalyst, and any thickener and extender pigment. The siloxane-modified adherend component is prepared using a polysiloxane resin and may also contain other resins such epoxy, phenolic, polyester, vinyl ester, polyurethane, polyamide, melamine, furan, acrylate, thermoplastic polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polycarbonate, ABS, polystyrene, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, polyamide, and polypropylene resins. When placed into contact with one another, the siloxane groups in the siloxane-modified adhesive and siloxane-modified adherend components form Si-O-Si bonds between themselves to form an attachment force that both occurs at ambient temperature within a reasonable amount of time, and that is greater than otherwise possible using adhesive/adherend systems having unmodified adhesive and/or adherend components.

    • Epoxy-polysiloxane polymer compositions of this invention are prepared by combining a resin component with a hardener component. The resin component comprises a non-aromatic epoxy rein ingredient and a polysiloxyne ingredient. The hardener component comprises an amine and optionally an organotin catalyst. The composition can also include aggregates, pigments, and other additives depending on the particular end use. The composition is prepared using a sufficient amount of water to promote hydrolysis of the polysiloxane and the polycondensation of the silanols produced by such hydrolysis. In its cured form, the epoxy-polysiloxane composition exists as a uniformly dispersed arrangement of linear epoxy chain fragments that are cross-linked with a continuous polysiloxane polymer chain, thereby forming a non-interpenetrating polymer network chemical structure that has substantial advantages over conventional epoxy systems. Protective coatings formed from such compositions exhibit excellent weatherability in sunlight, and superior chemical and corrosion resistance after curing.

    • Halogenated resin compositions are prepared without using halogen acids by combining at least one silicone intermediate, with an optional silane, an organic halogen-containing ingredient having functional groups selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, amine, and carboxyl groups, and a resin selected from the group consisting of hydroxy- and epoxy-functional resins. One or more amine curing agent and/or catalyst selected from the group consisting of organometallic compounds, acids, bases and mixtures thereof can optionally be added to facilitate ambient temperature curing of the resulting composition. The combined ingredients undergo hydrolysis reactions to form a halogenated organooxysilane that condenses to form a cross-linked halogenated polysiloxane composition. The resin also reacts with the condensing halogenated organooxysilane to introduce itself into the cross-linked halogenated polysiloxane and, thereby forming the halogenated polysiloxane resin composition. The composition is prepare without using an inorganic halogen acid, and is fully-cured at ambient temperature by exposure to atmospheric moisture to form a protective film, or alternatively a composite (10), having improved properties of chemical, abrasion, corrosion, weather, flame, and ultraviolet resistance.

    • Phenolic siloxane composition are prepared by 1) combining phenol with an aldehyde and an alkoxy or silanol-functional silicone intermediate, 2) combining a phenolic novolac resin with a formaldehyde donor and an alkoxy or silanol-functional silicone intermediate or 3) combining a phenolic resole resin with an alkoxy or silanol-functional silicone intermediate. Catalysts to facilitate the formation of a phenolic resin, the condensation of the phenolic resin and the hydrolysis and/or condensation of the silicone intermediate can optionally be added. The resulting composition comprises an IPN of siloxane polymers and phenolic polymers and has flame, heat and chemical resistance equal to or exceeding conventional phenolic resins and improved impact resistance, tensile strength, flexural modulus and density.
