    • 8947. Minto, J. H. April 21. AÙrating liquids.- Apparatus for carbonating and delivering liquids on draught, is so constructed that the liquid may be drawn off, at any one operation, up to a certain maximum amount and an equivalent quantity o f water admitted to the e carbonator, without any attendant waste of liquid or gas. Fig. 1 shows a general view with the top plate removed, Fig. 2 an end view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a view of the underside of the top plate, and Fig. 5 a section of the inlet valve. The measuring-cylinder 1 communicates through the valve 4 with a water supply 6, and through the delivery valve 5 with the carbonator 10. The branch 7 and pipes 8 , 9 connect the cylinder 1 to valve chambers 8, 9, which, respectively, control the inlet of liquid from the carbonator 10 and the outlet to the delivery arm 11, and are constructed as shown in the lower part of Fig. 5. Each of the valves 12, normally held closed by a spring, is opened, when the plunger 2 rises or falls, by the engagement of the indented slide 19 with one or other of the pivoted spring-held pawls 17, Fig. 3, which are provided with projecting nibs 17. A certain amount of lost motion is provided in the connection 20 to ensure the opening of the valves before the plunger 2 moves. In a modification, the water and carbonated liquid connections are made at opposite ends of the cylinder 1, and a small auxiliary pump or balance piston is employed to break the force of the in-coming water when supplied under considerable pressure. The valvechamber 8 is provided with a screw valve 24 working on two seats 24', 26 to control the gas inlet 25 and the inlet 8" from the carbonator, for use in filling the carbonator with an initial supply of liquid, and to adapt the apparatus for filling additional cylinders for bottling purposes.
