    • A device has a machining unit (15) movable in all directions with a working spindle (27) rotatively mounted in a swivelling ball. The swivelling ball is held between two clamping rings the lower of which rests inside a swivelling arm (26) so as to move horizontally in all directions. The swivelling arm (26) may be vertically adjusted, is hung so as to compensate for its weight and is coaxially mounted on an air bearing around a supporting column (14). The supporting column (14) stands on a sliding base (13) mounted on an air bearing. The sliding base (13) is movable in the longitudinal direction on a sliding slab (59). The sliding base (13) on the sliding slab (59) and the swivelling arm (26) around the supporting column (14) on the one hand, as well as the clamping rings in the swivelling arm (26) on the other hand, may be hydraulically clamped. When the swivelling arm (26) and the supporting column (14) are clamped, the working spindle (27) may still move slightly horizontally over +/-3mm in all directions. Nacheinander werden die Klemmschalen (6) in ihre beiden Endpositionen ihres Verschiebebereiches gefahren. Der da­zwischenliegende Verschiebeweg wird elektronisch gemes­sen. Die Antriebsmittel fahren danach die Klemmschalen (6) in die elektronisch errechnete Mittelposition der beiden vermessen Verschiebebereiche.
