    • Methods and apparatus are provided for determining a defibrillation treatment protocol in an external defibrillator whereby a user may override a CPR-first default protocol. The method includes following steps configured in a defibrillator controller of issuing an inquiry; waiting for a response to the inquiry for a set time; ordering a CPR treatment protocol if no response is received within the set time; analyzing a response; ordering a CPR treatment protocol upon receiving a non-affirmative response to the inquiry; and ordering a shock treatment protocol upon receiving an affirmative response to the inquiry. Upon selecting a shock treatment protocol, the defibrillator performs a shock analysis under the shock treatment protocol, and either orders a CPR treatment protocol if shock treatment is not indicated by the shock analysis or provides a defibrillation shock if shock treatment is indicated by the shock analysis. Queries may be presented to a user in visual, audible, or both visual and audible format.

    • An external defibrillator used to treat a patient wirelessly communicates with an implantable medical device (IMD) implanted in the patient. In some embodiments, a telemetry head may be removably coupled to the external defibrillator to facilitate communication with the IMD. The defibrillator may receive information, such as patient, device, physiological, and treatment information, from the IMD. The defibrillator may use some or all of this information during treatment of the patient. For example, the defibrillator may prompt a user, or modify programmed user prompts based on the information. The defibrillator may deliver therapy based on the information. The information may include real-time values of physiological parameters monitored by the IMD, which may be displayed by the external defibrillator. The external defibrillator may control delivery of therapy by the IMD. The defibrillator may collect medical event information during treatment of the patient, and store the medical event information in the IMD.

    • In general, the invention is directed to techniques for using an external defibrillator to detect a presence of an. implantable medical device (IMD) implanted within a patient, and providing therapy to the patient through communication between the external defibrillator and the IMD. An external defibrillator (12) provides prompts (34, 40, 44, 48) to a user of the external defibrillator to determine the presence of an IMD (14) implanted within the patient. For example, the external defibrillator may prompt the user to visually inspect the patient's chest for signs mat an IMD was implanted, such as a scar or raised portion of skin near the patient's clavicles. As another example, the external defibrillator may prompt the user to place a detection device (28) on the patient's chest. The detection device may be coupled to the external defibrillator, and may employ a magnet to initiate telemetry by the IMD to detect the presence of the IMD.

    • The disclosure describes a system in which medical devices, such as external defibrillators, vital signs monitors, or computers, collect medical event information during the treatment of a patient, and transmit the medical event information to a data destination, e.g., a computer at hospital or other medical facility. The system includes a remote server that stores data destination information for one or more data destinations, and transmits the data destinations information to the medical devices via a network. A medical device transmits medical event information to a data destination according to the data destination information that was received from the server for that destination. The data destination information for a particular destination may include, for example, information indicating a communication medium, a communication protocol, a telephone number, a network address, a network name, or login information used by a medical device to communicate with the destination.

    • A portable medical device, such as an external defibrillator, transmits data to another device, such as a computer. The portable medical device determines when the data transmission has ended, and automatically powers down after data transmission has ended. For example, the portable medical device may receive a signal from the other device, which is generated by the other device to acknowledge receipt of the complete data transmission from the portable medical device, and power down in response to receipt of the signal. In some embodiments, the portable medical device also determines whether it is appropriate to automatically power down after the data transmission has ended, and powers down based on this determination. For example, the portable medical device may determine that it is currently being used to treat a patient, in which case powering down may be inappropriate.
