Lamp-failure warning-devices.- The operation of a switch, controlling two lamps or other indicating- devices, is indicated at the distant control station through the operation of a relay included in the lamp circuit. The relay is provided with a polarized armature and an unpolarized armature interconnected to indicate direction and cessation of current. The armatures 2, 3 of the controlling relay 1, Fig. 1, place the lamp 9 and an indicating relay 4 in series across a battery 11 when in the positions shown, and in their lower position place the lamp 10 and relay 4 in series across the battery 11 in such a manner that the current through the relay 4 is reversed. The relay 4 is provided with an unpolarized armature 12 and a polarized armature 13, by means of which the direction of the current through the relay or the cessation of the current is indicated at the, distant station. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the battery 11 is placed in the common return circuit of the lamps 9, 10. In a further modification, the positions of the relay 4 and the battery 11 shown in Fig. 2 are interchanged. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the battery 11, Fig. 2, is replaced by the secondary winding 14 of a transformer 15, while a transformer 17 is placed between the armatures 2, 3 and one winding 18 of the relay 4. A second winding 19 is energized continuously with alternating current.

    • 113,615. McKenzie, Holland, & Westinghouse Power Signal Co., (Assignees of Holliday, J. S.). Feb. 20, 1917, [Convention date]. Electrical systems, automatic. - Relates to a relay comprising a magnetic structure in two parts, each having four pole-pieces a, b, c, d and a , b , c , d , opposite one another, leaving a narrow gap in which a conducting-vane V is mounted on, a pivot so that it is free to swing upwards and close a circuit by means of the tail piece Y, Fig. 4. Each part of the magnetic structure is provided with a winding L located on the vertical limb between the two inner polepieces and a second winding T embracing the two inner pole-pieces. Each winding is connected in series with the companion winding on the other magnetic part. For controlling the signals on an insulated section 10 of railway track, the windings L are connected to an alternating-current generator G, the track is connected to the generator through a transformer 13 the secondary of which contains a reactance 14 which produces a displacement of phase of the current taken from the track by the windings T in relation to the current in the windings L. The signal S is held at " clear " when no train is on the section by the action of the two magnetic fluxes relatively displaced in phase, which raise the vane and close a local signal-operating circuit at K. When a train is on the section the cons Tare short-circuited, the vane falls and the local circuit is broken, and the signal moves to " danger."
