    • A method and apparatus for limiting the absolute magnitude of an audio signal. The method may include firstly variable-gain reducing the gain of an audio signal, and then secondly variable-gain reducing the gain of the audio signal faster than the first variable-gain reduction, thereby limiting the absolute magnitude of the audio signal to a threshold. The first variable-gain reduction may include variable-gain reducing the gain of the audio signal in a first stage, and the second variable-gain reduction may include variable-gain reducing the gain of the audio signal in a second stage that reduces the gain faster than the first stage. The second variable-gain reduction may include delaying the audio signal, finding a peak among the delayed audio signal, calculating a fast gain from a found peak, and modifying the delayed audio signal with the calculated fast gain.

    • A method to process audio signals, an apparatus accepting audio signals, a carrier medium that carried instructions for a processor to implement the method to process audio signals, and a carrier medium carrying filter data to implement a filter of audio signals. The method includes filtering a pair of audio input signals by a process that produces a pair of output signals corresponding to the results of: filtering each of the input signals with a HRTF filter pair, and adding the HRTF filtered signals. The HRTF filter pair is such that a listener listening to the pair of output signals through headphones experiences sounds from a pair of desired virtual speaker locations. Furthermore, the filtering is such that, in the case that the pair of audio input signals includes a panned signal component, the listener listening to the pair of output signals through headphones is provided with the sensation that the panned signal component emanates from a virtual sound source at a center location between the virtual speaker locations.

    • An interactive spatialized audiovisual system links a plurality of remote used terminals. The system comprises a networked computer having an associated user database including user status information. Input means are provided at the computer for receiving a plurality of audio streams and associated locating data from the remote user terminals for virtually locating the users relative to one another within a virtual user environment such as a chat room environment. Selection means are provided for enabling selection of at least the first group of the audio streams in a first selection process based on status information in the user database. Output means output the selected group of audio streams and associated locating data for spatialization of the audio streams relative to a first listener-based audio reference frame which is substantially coherent with visual representations of the audio sources defined by the locating data at the first user terminal. Merging means are provided for merging at least some of the audio streams into a merged audio stream for transmittal to the first and other user terminal, with the merged audio stream being spatialized so as to provide for a spatialized background audio effect in the audio reference frame at the user terminal.

    • Apparatus for and methods of operation of digital filters and certain other electronic digital signal processing devices are provided to improve the accuracy and efficiency of filtering. Particularly, the apparatus and method includes a digital filter with a long impulse response and lower latency, built by operating a numbr of small component filters (F1, F2, F3) in parallel and combining their outputs by addition, with each component filter operating with a different delay such that the net operation of the ensemble of said component filters is the same as a single filter with a longer impulse response, and the latency of the ensemble is equal to the shortest latency of the component filters. At least one group of the component filters is implemented using a Discrete Fourier Transform technique. A Fourier transform processor adapted to efficiently transform strings of real data is also described.
