    • A fastener (50) is disclosed suitable for securing a grinding wheel (92) to the spindle of an angle grinder, the fastener (50) being capable of tightening and loosening by hand. The fastener (50) comprises a first disc-shaped component (52) having a first pressure transmitting surface (53) adapted to bear against the grinding wheel (92), and a second disc-shaped component (54) having a threaded hub (56) non-rotatably fixed thereto. The first and second components (52, 54) are assembled on the hub (56) so as to be rotatable with respect to each other, and the second component (54) is adapted to apply an axially directed compressive force to press the first component (52) against the grinding wheel when a torque is applied to the second component (54). A solid dry lubricant washer (62) is provided between facing surfaces of said first and second components (52, 54) in an annular recess (64) immediately adjacent the hub (56), for reducing friction when one of the components (52, 54) is rotated relative to the other (54, 52). The lubricant washer (62) can ensure that a significantly increased proportion of the torque applied to the second component (54) is converted to compressive force transmitted through the first component (52) to the grinding wheel (92). A gripping device in the form of a flap (72) is pivotally connected to the second component (54), and is capable of pivoting to an upright position in which the flap (72) can be manually grasped to apply a torque to the fastener.

    • A fastener bearing assembly (10) for reducing the turning friction between a head of a fastener (12) and an object to be fastened, for example, a vehicle wheel. The assembly (10) comprises a first part (14) having a first pressure transmitting surface (16), and a second part (18) having a second pressure transmitting surface (20), and adapted to rotatably receive the first pressure transmitting surface (16) in facing relation thereto. A solid dry lubricant material in the form of an annulus (22) is provided to reduce friction between the first and second pressure transmitting surfaces (16, 20). In use, the first part (14) rotates with the head of the fastener (12) and the second part (18) remains stationary relative to the surface (23) of the fastened object so that the dry lubricant annulus (22) acts as a bearing between the head of the fastener and the fastened object. A locking member (40) adapted to engage a surface of both the first and second parts (14, 18) may be provided to prevent rotation of the first and second parts relative to one another.

    • A locking fastener (10) comprises a nut (12) having a threaded portion (14) formed about a central axis (16) of the fastener. A head portion (18) of the nut is formed integral to the threaded portion (14), for gripping the fastener during tightening or loosening. An inner member (22) is provided coaxial with the head portion (18) and is designed to be mechanically coupled to an underside of the head portion (18) so as to be substantially immobile relative to the head portion. Inner member (22) is provided with inclined cam means (24) in the form of a plurality of cam surfaces arranged in an annular configuration about the inner member (22). A locking member (26) is provided coaxial with the threaded portion (14) and has a matching cam means (28) on one face adapted to rotatably interengage in facing relation with the inclined cam means (24) on inner member (22). A first pressure transmitting surface (30) on the opposite face of the locking member (26) is rotatably received in facing relation to a second pressure transmitting surface (34) provided on an outer member (32). Outer member (32) is coaxial with the locking member (26). A solid friction reducing material in the form of an annulus (36) is located between the first pressure transmitting surface (30) of the locking member (26) and the second pressure transmitting surface (34) of the outer member (32). Locking means for releasably locking the locking member (26) in position relative to the outer member (32) are also provided. In use, the outer member (32) can be held stationary relative to a fastened object so that the friction reducing annulus (36) can act as a bearing for the head portion (18) during tightening or loosening of the fastener and when the fastener has been tightened and the locking member has been locked in position relative to the outer member (32), inadvertent loosening of the head portion (18) due to vibration can be inhibited by the interengaging cam means (24, 28).

The teeth of the toothed outer periphery (20) of each toothed wheel (18) are adapted to function like the teeth of a conventional gearwheel whereby, in use, the toothed outer periphery (20) can be engaged laterally for transmitting a torque to the associated fastener (12) of the toothed wheel (18). Each fastener (12) is provided with friction reducing means comprising a solid dry lubricant material contained with in a region between the head portion (16) of the fastener (12) and the object to be fastened whereby, in use, the solid dry lubricant material can act as a low friction bearing for the fastener (12). The fasteners (12) are arranged so that the toothed outer peripheries (20) of the associated toothed wheels (18) of at least two of the fasteners (12) can be simultaneously mechanically coupled to a gear rotating mechanism (22) whereby, in use, the at least two fasteners (12) can be tightened or loosened simultaneously by operating the gear rotating mechanism (22). A motor vehicle wheel incorporating the toothed fastener system (10) is also dscribed.
