To display icons, display patterns sections (171, 172, 173) of a light modulating layer (17) are formed, and control areas (114, 115, 116) superimposed on the display pattern sections when viewed from above are formed on a display panel (11). Particularly, the control areas (114, 115, 116) are somewhat larger than the displayed icons so as to completely cover them and to surround them with enough room. Even if there is somewhat pattern misregistration in a horizontal direction between the display pattern sections (171, 172, 173) formed on a transparent film (14) and the control areas (114, 115, 116), the icons can be displayed with no problems.
