    • The invention provides an improved method of exploring paths having multiple layers. Such paths may be through any of a number of types of networks, such as transportation networks, distribution networks, business structure networks, or telecommunication networks. The method initially displays in a path explorer view, the nodes and links of a first layer of the path in a linear configuration. Upon selection/deselection of a layer expander icon located near the first layer node at which the path traverses to the second layer, the method expands/collapses the second layer of nodes and links in a linear configuration which is parallel to, but offset from the first layer. The method further contemplates the display of a topology view which, in conjunction with the path explorer view, graphically displays a structure of a selected layer of the path, with the path visually distinguished therein.

Instead of the conventional method of displaying nodes and links as points and lines respectively, in accordance with the present invention, the nodes are each represented by parallel node lines. The links are then represented by link lines drawn perpendicular to the node lines, each of said link lines terminating at the node lines representing the nodes connected by the link represented by the link line. A graphical user interface incorporating this improved method of displaying nodes and links is also contemplated.

    • A method and system for a telecommunication network management tool to represent a telecommunication network layout including a plurality of distinct network entities related to one another by a variety of attributes. A user interface can be used for altering a display of a network representation model to help a system manager to systematically navigate the distinct network entities and associated attributes of the selected network. An overlay view selector is used for affecting the display content of the representation on the user interface. The view selector contains a plurality of presentation modes for altering the presentation of desired elements selected from the network layout. Presentation of the selected network includes an information subset displayed over a reference view, which helps the user to maintain the information subset in context of the network layout. The management tool can be used to select and highlight specific network entities in context to help increase network manager efficiency in network layout and maintenance.

    • The present invention relates to a graphical user interface (GUI) for displaying historical and current performance information for a route in a communications network, the route having several paths between two end points. Performance data from the network is collected and processed to generate route and path performance data. The processed data is stored in a database. The GUI is embodied in a network management device which draws upon information stored in the database. In a preferred embodiment, the GUI displays a route panel showing the structure of the route, a timebar showing the time period for which information is displayed, a paths panel showing information about each path in a tabular format, a selected paths panel showing information about selected paths in a tabular format, and a performance panel showing performance data in a graph.

    • This invention provides an improved graphical user interface (GUI) for telecommunications network administration. The GUI allows a network administrator to maintain an association between a link bundle and the contents of that link bundle by displaying a network topology including the link bundle, as well as the contents of that link bundle in the same window. The GUI further allows easy navigation between groups of NE's wherein there are a number of inter-group links extending from a particular NE, by displaying characteristics of these links in the same window as a network topology of the NE group under investigation, and allowing the user to follow a selected one of these links to a different NE group.

    • A visualization method for a hub network configuration allows exploration of a chosen network by way of a graphical display interface (GUI), wherein multiple distinct network segments such as lines or rings are shown attached to a common node or centralized hub. The technique combines a graphical view of the segments controlled by a segment selector. The selector is coupled to a series of display indicators and a list of the attached rings contained in the network. The list can contain descriptive elements of the segments, or can provide links to such detail. A mutually exclusive selection of the attached segments is enabled using either the selector or the list of attached segments. For each segment selected, the display indicators can show the currently displayed segments on the GUI, help to highlight on the GUI a selected attached segment and provide an indication of attached segments that are related in function to the selected segment. Selected and remaining segments of the network are displayed in various shadings or colours, which enables a Network Manager or other user of the system and method to easily distinguish and consider these aspects alternatively. In the graphical view, attached segments can be displayed in stacked, overlaid, or isolated formats. The segments can consist of rings, lines, stars, bars, and chains.
