摘要： Process for reducing the water and carboxylic acid content of an alcohol composition containing at least one alcohol having one to four carbon atoms, water and at least one carboxylic acid having from one to four carbon atoms by contacting the alcohol composition with a desiccant bed containing at least one porous inorganic oxide material at elevated temperature. At least one of the porous inorganic oxide material(s) contains Brønsted acid sites and/or neutralized Brønsted acid sites.

摘要： A process for the hydrogenation of methyl acetate to methanol and ethanol comprising feeding a hydrogenation feed composition comprising methyl acetate and water, together with hydrogen and at least one carbon oxide selected from carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, into a hydrogenation unit containing a copper-zinc oxide hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogenating the methyl acetate to produce a hydrogenation product stream comprising ethanol, methanol, unreacted methyl acetate, water, unreacted hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ethyl acetate, wherein said hydrogenation unit is operated in the vapour phase at elevated temperature, preferably at a temperature in the range of from 180 to 270° C., and elevated pressure, preferably in the range of from 20 to 100 bara, and wherein the total molar ratio of hydrogen to methyl acetate fed to the hydrogenation unit is in the range of from 5:1 to 20:1, and the total molar ratio of methyl acetate to carbon oxide(s) fed to the hydrogenation unit is in the range of from 1:2 to 100:1, and wherein the hydrogenation product stream is separated into a first liquid product stream comprising the majority of the ethanol, methanol, unreacted methyl acetate, water, and ethyl acetate, and a first gaseous product stream comprising the majority of the unreacted hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, and wherein at least a portion of the first gaseous product stream is recycled to the hydrogenation unit.

The process is carried out by 1 converting the monohydric aliphatic paraffinic alcohol(s) containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms in a reactive distillation column at elevated pressure and temperature into a heads stream having the corresponding same carbon number alkene(s) and ether(s), 2 separating the heads stream from step 1 into an ether(s) enriched stream and an alkene(s) enriched stream, 3 recycling at least part of the ether(s) enriched stream from step 2 as a reflux return to the reactive distillation column, 4 simultaneously separating the alkene(s) enriched stream from step 2 into alkene(s) and ether(s), and 5 recycling at least part of the separated ether(s) from step 4 into the reactive distillation column. An alkene(s) stream from step 4 is then recovered.
