    • A method, a system, or an article of manufacture provides Mobility Management (MM), for example, an update procedure, in a Core Network (CN) of a mobile communication system. The Mobile Station (MS) includes an indicator which defines an update type. The update type includes: all CN entities; one type of CN entity only. If the indicator has the update type of all CN entities, the MS registers all CN entities. If the indicator has the update type of one type of CN entity only, the MS registers the one type of CN entity only. The CN entities may be MSC/NVLR CN entity, SGSN CN entity, or other CN entity. The method includes the MS determining to which of the CN entity to perform the update procedure; the MS updating the CN entity; the CN acknowledging the MS whether update is successful or failed; and the CN acknowledging the MS whether update of other CN entity is needed, if needed, the CN defining to which of the CN entity to perform update, and continuing the update of the defined CN entity. The MS does not have to know the services subscribed to a user, nor does the MS have to know the configuration of the CN.

    • A method and arrangement for limiting the paging load of a mobile communication system. The number of calls initiated during a given time interval is counted and the number of calls to be initiated during a given time interval is counted and the number of calls to be initiated is limited to a predetermined maximum value. The system is implemented with a counter that counts the number of calls to be initiated during given time interval, a timer which measures the desired time interval and a comparator for limiting the number of calls to be initiated to a predetermined maximum value.

    • The GSM system includes a protocol for reestablishing a lost call. A problem occurs if the call is lost after an inter-MSC (MSC-A, MSC-B) handover, resulting in that the system does not know into which MSC the subscriber data of a mobile station (MS) has been updated. If the MSC has changed during the call, and the MS is no longer able to contact the cell served by the original MSC-A, the call will be lost. In the method according to the invention, the MSC serving the location area of the mobile station detects a start message (1′) transmitted by the mobile station and containing the Last Location Area Identifier of the mobile station. Based on the Last Location Area Identifier, the second center MSC-B, which detects the start message (1′), determines the first center MSC-A in whose area the call was started. Following this, the second center MSC-B may establish a connection to the first center MSC-A. At this stage, the centers (MSC-A) and MSC-B) reverse roles and the method proceeds as in a conventional inter-MSC handover. The method of the invention for establishing a connection may also be applied to a satellite system that uses the GSM system network structure.

    • A method and a wireless telecommunication system of performing network-assisted handover of calls between a serving network and another wireless network that employs communication protocols different from those of the serving network. A message is sent from a mobile station of a user to the serving wireless network, which includes an indication that the mobile station is capable of communicating with the neighboring wireless network. Information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network is also sent from the serving wireless network to the mobile station. Using the information relating to the communication characteristics of the neighboring wireless network, the mobile station receives radio signals from the neighboring wireless network. The quality of the radio signals between the mobile station and the neighboring wireless network is measured. The serving wireless network sends a message to the neighboring wireless network to request a handover of the communication transaction when the quality of the radio signals between the neighboring wireless network and the mobile station meets a predetermined minimum threshold. Then a handover of the communication transaction from the serving wireless network to the neighboring wireless network is executed after the neighboring wireless network has established a communication channel for the mobile station pursuant to the handover request.
