Composite, elliptic, and thin-plate springs.- Relates to springs for chairs and sofas, and consists in reinforcing a main flat spring 3 by a bow-shaped secondary spring 13, one end of which is attached to the main spring by a sliding joint formed by a bolt and slot 14, 15, the other end being secured to the mainspring or to a supporting end spring 5, or to the frame. The main spring may be supported as shown in Fig. 1, by end springs 4, 5, one of which is in turn supported by a coiled spring 9 detachably mounted in brackets 10 carrying a beam 8, or as shown in Fig. 4, the end springs may be reinforced by auxiliary springs 23, 24, and one of them may be connected to the main spring by a hinge 22. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the end supporting-springs are slidably connected to the frame as at 37, 42. In a further modification, one of the end springs may itself be formed as a coil spring and connected to a spindle mounted in brackets.
