    • A device (1) for measuring tensile stress in a tensioned elongate wire (46) or like member which may be ferrous or have a ferrous attachment. The device includes a magnet (10), a sensor (8) and a microprocessor (4) connected to receive an output signal from the sensor (8). The length of wire (46) is measured and is entered into the device (1), along with the weight per unit length of the wire (46), via a keypad (2). The wire (46) is then vibrated and the sensor (8) detects changes in the magnetic flux density of the field of the magnet (10) caused by the vibration. The microprocessor (4) determines the frequency of the vibrating wire (46) from the output signal from the sensor (8) and computes the tensile stress in the wire (46) from the determined frequency and the entered length and weight per unit length of the wire (46).
