    • 220,746. Hardy, A., and Johnson, L. K. June 12, 1923. Cameras, roll-film, masking in; roller-slides. -In a camera adapted to take spools of difterent widths, the spools are mounted on holders comprising end plates 15, 16, Fig. 7, with the centering pins and telescopic arms 17, 18, which are connected by a retracting spring 21. The spool housings, Fig. 1 and 5, have a series of slots 33, corresponding to different widths of films into which the peripheral sections 31 of the discs 15, 16 fit and the spool-holders are held in position by the projections 32 against which the back cover 2 abuts. For the winding- on spool the turning disc 24 and an inner disc 25, Fig. 5, carrying the stud 28 for the, winding end of the spool are screwed together and shaped to form a peripheral groove 27 engaging a stamped-out edge of an opening in the plate 15. The recesses 29, 30 are engaged by the end 49 of a retractable winding stem 45. This stem rotates with the sleeve 39 and can telescope within it against the action of the spring 47 and the sleeve 39 itself can telescope a limited extent within an outer casing 36 against the action of the spring 40 so as to allow the forked head 49 to come within the side panel of the camera when the largest spool is used. The casing 36 is mounted between an outer bracket 38 and an inner flanged plate 37 which is flush with the inner face of the camera, and this casing 36 is turned by the winding handle 44 and cross-bar 41. To prevent the winding handle being turned backwards, spring-positioned rollers 52 are interposed between the retaining flanges of the plate 37 and inclined cam faces 53 carried by the casing 36. A series of nesting masks 55 is provided within the camera frame, the inner mask being of a size corresponding to the film used, and the film is pressed on to the rear face of the masks by a pressure plate 56 with flat springs 57 contacting with the outer cover 2. Inclined inspection slots 58 in the cover 2 and plate 56 are provided to allow inspection of the numbers on the different sizes of films.
