Driving-gear.-In single or double acting steam or other gaseous pressure engines, the pistons of oppositely disposed cylinders or groups of cylinders are connected to opposite ends of a reciprocating carrier 12 which actuates a distributing valve and drives the main shaft 9 through a pair of nuts 13, 14 engaging crossed threads thereon and adapted to be held from rotation alternatively, according to the direction of the stroke, bv clutch engagement with bosses 33 on the carrier. The driving gear is arranged in an oil sump 10 in a chamber 8 to which the cylinders 6 are attached, the device as a whole being mounted in standards 7, the shaft 9 carrying flywheels 32. The actuating fluid is supplied through pipes 24 to a casing 22, the distributing valve 17, Fig. 4, having a diametrical tube 21 adapted to connect the supply alternately to pipes 25 leading to the cylinders. As one cylinder is charged the other is exhausted through its pipe 25 and an exhaust port 26 in the valve sleeve 17. The valve is operated by a cam 19 rocked by lugs or tappets 20 on the carrier 12. Adjustable stops limiting the rocking of the cam enable the valve openings to be regulated according to the pressure of the supply fluid.
