    • A controller for a multi-primary display having M>3 primaries receives a set of input N-primary image color defining values comprising drive values for N primaries for each pixel. A compensator (317) generates a set of compensated N-primary image color (N>=3) defining values by applying a luminance compensation to the values of the set of input N-primary image color defining values where the luminance compensation for each pixel depends on the chromaticity of the pixel. A backlight processor (311) determines backlight levels in response to the compensated N-primary image color defining values.     • A multi-primary display with more than three additive primaries comprises a spatial repetition of a pixel repetition block. The block comprises a first pixel row (1201) of pixels of primaries. Each pixel is divided into a plurality of sub-pixels including at least a higher luminance sub-pixel adjacent to a lower luminance sub-pixel. The first pixel row (1201) forms a first sub-pixel row (1203) and a complementary sub-pixel row (1205) adjacent to each other and comprising complementary sub-pixels. The sub-pixels are arranged such that a difference between a first combined maximum luminance for higher luminance sub-pixels of the first sub-pixel row (1203) and a second combined maximum luminance for higher luminance sub-pixels of the complementary sub-pixel row (1205) is no more than 30% of a sum of the first combined maximum luminance and the second combined luminance. The invention may provide an improved display with e.g. reduced pixel structure visibility.

    • A display panel control apparatus receives an image to be displayed by a display panel (103) in at least a first field and a second field. A first driver (107) generates a first drive signal for a pixel for the first field in response to an image pixel value and a second driver (109) generates a second drive signal for the pixel for the second field in response to the image value. The first and second drive levels correspond to first and second radiated luminance levels respectively from the pixel. The first and second radiated luminance levels are different and have a combined radiated luminance corresponding to the luminance level for the pixel. The first and second drive signals are selected from a first and second set of quantized values which are arranged to provide more discrete values of the combined radiated luminance than are included in the first and second sets.
