    • It is the desire of the present invention to provide the radio listener with personalized, on-demand access to news, entertainment, and other information in an audible form ("On-Demand Radio" or "ODR"). The present invention discloses methods and systems such that information, according to the user's preferences, will be downloaded and/or broadcasted to the user, stored in the memory of the user/listener's individual ODR unit device, and converted into audible signals for delivery to the user. The ODR unit delivers information in an automatic play sequence which is defined by the user. The user can navigate through the play sequence of the stored information using only a few contextually-sensitive keys, or in an alternative embodiment, through spoken commands. Downloading/broadcasting of the information can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: radio broadcast, subcarrier broadcast, satellite transmission, downloading from the Internet, and/or downloading from an information service through a computer and/or computer network. Information transfer to the ODR can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: through a radio receiver in the ODR; through infrared communication devices, computer communications using, e.g., a modem, and/or through a memory medium such as, but not limited to, a flash memory card, hard disk, and the like.

    • A micro-projector comprises an LED layer, a light pipe coupled to the LED, a LCOS panel, a projection lens, a PBS, an aperture layer coupled to the output end of the light pipe which has a transmissive opening for transmitting a portion of the light output and a reflective surface for reflecting the remaining portion of the light output toward the input end of the light pipe. Thus, the remaining portion of the light output is recycled back to the LED to increase the brightness of the light output of the LED. The micro-projector also comprises a reflective polarizer disposed between the light pipe and the aperture layer for transmitting the light output of a predetermined polarization and reflecting other polarization of the light output, thereby recycling unused polarization of the light output back to the LED to increase the brightness of the light output of the LED.

    • A compact dual ellipsoidal reflector (DER) system for illuminating a target with rays of electromagnetic radiation comprises first and second molded module. The first molded module has at least a first ellipsoidal reflector section comprising an optical axis, a first focal point and a second focal point. The rays of electromagnetic radiation being directed substantially proximate to the first focal point of the first ellipsoidal reflector section and substantially converge at the second focal point of the first ellipsoidal reflector section. The second molded module has at least a second ellipsoidal reflector section comprising an optical axis, a first focal point and a second focal point. The second ellipsoidal reflector section being positioned and oriented with respect to the first ellipsoidal reflector section to receive at least a portion of the rays of radiation reflected from the first ellipsoidal reflector section and reflect the portion of the rays of radiation to the second focal point of the second ellipsoidal reflector section.     • A waveguide polarization recovery system both polarizes the input light energy for use with an LCD imager and converts the polarity of unusable light energy to add to the illumination of the LCD imager. The compact polarization recovery waveguide system generally includes: (1) an input waveguide that provides non-polarized light energy into the system; (2) an output waveguide that receives polarized light energy from the system; (3) a polarized beam splitter that received the light energy from the input waveguide and transmits light energy of a first polarization type and reflects light energy of a second polarization type, and (4) a wave plate that modifies the polarization of either the transmitted or reflected light energy. The polarization recovery system also generally includes one or more mirrors that are positioned as need to direct the transmitted and the reflected light energy to the output waveguide. The input and output waveguides may be shaped as needed by the projection system. For example, either one or both of the input and output waveguides may be tapered as needed to produce a desired image. In the waveguide polarization recovery system, the input and output waveguides are configured to have either an either a substantially parallel or a substantially perpendicular orientation. In another embodiment, the waveguide polarization recovery system further includes has one or more “gaps” of optically clear material positioned between the optical components to encourage the occurrence to total internal reflection that minimizes the loss of the optical energy by the system.

    • A multiple output illumination system includes a first and second reflectors each having an optical axis and a first and second focal points substantially on the optical axis. In one embodiment, one of the focal points of each reflector are proximate to one another, while the other focal point of each reflector is distal from each other. In another embodiment, the first and second reflectors are pairs of reflectors, and the second reflector of each points away from the optical axes of the first and second reflectors. An intermediate reflector may redirect radiation from the second reflectors. A source of electromagnetic radiation substantially proximate to the focal points that are proximate to one another produces rays of radiation that are reflected by the each reflector in different directions, converging substantially at each of the distal focal points. Light pipes placed substantially proximate to the distal focal points may collect the radiation.
