March 22, 1950 [March 23, 1949], No. 7970/49. Class 87(ii) The detachable extrusion head 7 is clamped against the extrusion barrel B by means of a screw 15 threaded in a strap 17 welded at 21 to the barrel. The strap comprises two bars 17 1 and an internally threaded sleeve 16 in which the screw works. The barrel part against which the extrusion head is clamped is, as shown, a flanged tube 4 secured by bolts 3 to the barrel proper, and the strap is welded to this tube. The feed screw 2 works in renewable liners 5. The extrusion head has an annular tongue 12 which fits in a groove 13 in the front liner 5, and by this means the head may be angularly adjusted about the barrel axis. The head may be rapidly released by running back the screw 15 to an extent greater than the height of the tongue 12. When something is normally connected to the head, e.g. a vulcanizing chamber or cooling tank, it may be so connected by a quick-release coupling. When the core tube is placed under vacuum and a vacuum seal or gland is provided through which the core is fed into the core tube, the vacuum seal or gland may be connected to the extrusion head by a quick-release coupling. The extrusion head, which is heated by means of passages 33, is described in Specification 665,645.

[Class 122(v)] In a sealing gland, at the point of entry into a vessel containing pressure fluid of a relatively moving body, of the type in which the pressure of the fluid in the vessel is substantially balanced by that of a counter pressure liquid supplied to the interior of the gland, the counter pressure liquid is admitted to the clearance between the gland and the body passing through it, in the form of an annular stream inclined with respect to the direction of travel of the body so as to have a substantial component of movement in that direction. A gland at the inlet end of a vulcanising chamber 11 containing steam or other hot pressure fluid through which a rubber cable 10 passes comprises a holder 1, in two parts 1a and 1b, containing a pair of bushes 2, 3 shaped to form a pair of conical portions 5, 6 which converge towards a relatively short throat 4 lying partly in one bush and partly in the other portion. The contiguous ends 7, 8 of the bushes 2, 3 are coned and spaced to leave between them an annular port 9, inclined in the direction of movement of the cable, through which a stream of water is supplied via an annular chamber 18, longitudinal ports 17, and an annular groove 15 in the holder to the clearance between the throat 4 and the cable 10. The parts 1a 1b of the holder and the bush 5 and 6 are in halves and the bushes are axially located by collars 12 and 13. A third internally coned bush 31 having a throat 32 is fitted between the bush 5 and the inlet end of the gland and most of the surplus water escaping from the throat 4 flows through an annular port 34 formed by the space between the bushes 5 and 31 and is led away through a port 36 to a detachable chamber 37 on the external surface of the holder part 1a. The annular chamber 18 reduces the transfer of heat by conduction from the steam along the gland wall.

[Class 122(v)] In a sealing gland for a cable moving through an opening in the wall of a vessel 23 containing pressure fluid a cylinder 1 has clamped therein, between an apertured fixed end wall 9 and an apertured detachable end wall 11, a number of soft rubber bushes 2 having centrally apertured inner conical portions 4, all pointing in the same direction, attached to peripheral flange portions 3 of substantially less diameter than the cylinder bore and separated by the central portions 8 of spacing discs 6 each of which has a rim portion 7 which is a sliding fit in the cylinder 1 and projects beyond both faces of the central portion 8 to embrace the flange portions 3 of neighbouring bushes 2 and align them axially; the rim portions 7 have slots therein which place annular chambers 13 between the bushes 2 and the bore of cylinder 1 in communication with one another and the central portions 8 have passages 14 extending from the slots to the internal surface of the disc 6 and ports 20 are provided in the cylinder wall for the supply of counter-pressure liquid to the inter-communicating annular chambers 13. The detachable end wall 11 has an inner hub portion 15 which bears directly, or through a thrust washer 16, on the adjacent bush 2. Between the fixed end wall 9 and its adjacent bush 2 is a guide bush 17 having a slotted rim portion 19 displaced axially with respect to its hub portion so as to leave an annular space between the rim 19 and the end wall 9. Counter-pressure liquid which acts on the external surface of the bushes 2 to urge them against the cable (not shown) moving therethrough is supplied via pipe 31, ports 28a in a tube 25 forming an extension of the cylinder 1, ports 20, chambers 13, and passages 14. The apertures 5 of the bushes 2 in their normal state may be equal to or less than the cable cross-section. In a modification means are provided to cut off the supply of counterpressure liquid to the ports 20.

    • 651,623. Cable-making machines. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., RICHARDSON, A. B. F. G., TUNNICLIFF, E., and FISHER, I. K. Oct. 11, 1948, No. 26480. [Class 36] [Also in Group V] A continuous process'comprises the following steps :- (a) a covering of rubber or similar material is extruded on to the core &c. whilst the core is travelling at a constant linear speed; (b) the hot covering is cooled by contact with a fluid coolant; (c) the cooled covered core is passed into and through a vulcanizing chamber containing hot fluid under pressure; (d) the core with its vulcanized covering is passed, directly and without material change in the external pressure exerted upon it, into and through a cooling liquid maintained under a pressure substantially equal to that of the vulcanizing fluid; (e) finally the core with the cooled vulcanized rubber covering is reeled. A core 1 is drawn off a reel 2 by a capstan 3 and passed into a screw extruder 4 where a rubber covering is applied. The core may be subjected to vacuum before covering, by fitting a vacuum seal 39 to the core tube 40 or to an extension thereof and evacuating the tube. The core tube may be water-cooled. The covered core then passes through a long open trough 8 which is kept filled with cold water, over guide pulley 10, around capstan 9, over pulleys 13a, 13b, 14a and 14b, and through an inlet sealing gland 22 into a vulcanizing chamber 15. This gland 22 may be of the kind described in Specification 651,622, [Group XXVI], in which escape of steam from the vulcanizing chamber is prevented or reduced by water under pressure or other counter-pressure fluid, water escaping from the gland being collected in a catch box 23. Steam &c. is passed into the vulcanizing chamber 15 through an inlet pipe 18 and distributer sleeve 17, and condensate is removed through outlet pipe 24. The chamber 15 is surrounded by a jacket 16 which is fed with steam &c. at 19 and relieved of condensate at 25. The outlet end of the tube 15 is shown in Fig. 3 and includes the same fittings as those shown at the inlet end in Fig. 2. From the vulcanizing chamber 15 the covered core passes through an outlet gland 26 into a cooling tube 27 into which cooling water &c., at the same pressure as that of the steam in chamber 15, is fed by a pipe 29. The gland 26 may be of the kind described in Specification 651,634, [Group XXVI], in which escape of steam from the vulcanizing tube is prevented by rubber or other bushes which are pressed towards the covered core by pressure water from pipe 28. The covered core emerges from the cooling tube through a gland 30 similar to gland 26 but not fed with pressure water so that water from the cooling tube escapes therethrough. The cooled core passes around a capstan 35 and on to a reel 36. The three capstans 3, 9, 35 are driven by an electric motor 37. The peripheral speed of capstan 9 is slightly less than those of capstans 3 and 35. All three capstans may rotate at the same angular velocity, the variation in peripheral speed being obtained by making the surfaces of two of them, preferably 3 and 35, of stepped form, and making them axially slidable. The capstan 9 may be omitted.

March 22, 1950 [March 23, 1949], No. 7971/49. Class 87(ii) Relates to extrusion heads 1 of the socalled "self-centring" type, which are secured to the extrusion cylinder 7 with the axis of the head lying transverse to the axis of the barrel, the head having a through bore 2 and a lateral opening 6 communicating with the cylinder; in the bore 2 fits a core tube 14 which has a central web 21 that forms two passages 19 through which material passes to the matrix 11. According to the invention the web 21 extends forwardly beyond the front edge A of the opening 6, the length of the extension being about one half or more of the length A-B which is the diameter of the opening 6 in the direction of the through bore 2. The length of the web extension may be 1¢ or twice that of A-B: as shown it extends from A to the front edge C of the core tube. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the core tube (with a core-supporting detachable nose-piece 23), and Fig. 5 a plan thereof. The web extension is broadened at 25a where it bears against the bore 2, and a similar bearing 25b is provided on the lower surface of the core tube. A pin 26 retains the nose-piece 23 in position in tube 14. Tube 14 is located angularly in position by a key 18 in a keyway in bore 2. The head is secured to the cylinder by a screw clamp 9, 10 described in Specification 660,249.
