    • Techniques are described herein for generating a deal score to indicate a relative value of an offer for a commerce element. In one example, the deal score for a particular offer is based on a difference between a discounted price specified by the particular offer and an average of discounted price(s) specified by other offer(s). If the difference reaches a threshold, then a relatively high deal score is generated. Otherwise, a relatively low deal score is generated. In another example, the deal score is based on a difference between an intermediate value and the discounted price specified by the present offer. The intermediate value may be provided by combining discounted price(s) specified by other offer(s) and the non-discounted price of the commerce element being offered. If the difference reaches a threshold, then a relatively high deal score is generated. Otherwise, a relatively low deal score is generated.

    • Different images, or sub-images, are rendered at different wavelet decoding rates, the more rapidly decoded wavelets forming a focal region about which less detailed images, or sub-images, are formed. In a preferred embodiment, sets of images or sub-images form levels of a hierarchy, and the wavelet encodings of these images and sub-images are decoded at rates associated with each level of the hierarchy. A single image may be partitioned into sub-images, or regions, that form each level of the hierarchy, or independent images may be arranged in a hierarchical manner, and subsequently rendered using a hierarchy of wavelet decoding schemes. The hierarchy can be developed at a remote site, and a hierarchical wavelet encoding can be transmitted to a local site, so that the hierarchical foveation effect can be rendered while the details of the lower levels of the hierarchy are being communicated.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for recommending items of interest to a user, such as television program recommendations, before a viewing history or purchase history of the user is available. A third party viewing or purchase history is processed to generate stereotype profiles that reflect the typical patterns of items selected by representative viewers. A user can select the most relevant stereotype(s) from the generated stereotype profiles and thereby initialize his or her profile with the items that are closest to his or her own interests. A clustering routine partitions the third party viewing or purchase history (the data set) into clusters, such that points (e.g., television programs) in one cluster are closer to the mean of that cluster than any other cluster. A distance computation routine evaluates the closeness of a television program to each cluster based on the distance between a given television program and the mean of a given cluster.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for generating television program recommendations based on a user-specified query. The television programming recommender automatically constructs a query based on previous searches that have been executed by a user. The television programming recommender can automatically initiate a search in response to a user command using the top-N search terms for each attribute that have been previously used in a query. Each time a search is initiated by the user the query is decomposed to identify the attribute-value pairs specified by the user and a counter is incremented. When an automatic search is initiated, the top-N attribute-value pairs are retrieved for each possible attribute and automatically placed in a search bin. The attributes of each program in an electronic program guide are compared to the attribute-value pairs specified in the automatic query to identify programs satisfying the limitations of the automatic query.
