    • The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses for speech signal encoding and decoding. In accordance with the invention, a discrete time speech signal is encoded by identifying a speech element in the speech signal. If the speech element is identified for the first time, the encoder (108) creates a unique tag representing the speech element and an associating between the speech element and the unique tag in a memory and transmits the speech element in discrete time form and the tag and an indication that the tag is to repre- sent the speech element to a decoder (118) . If the speech element was identified before, the encoder (108) obtains a unique tag representing the speech element from the memory, removes the speech element from the speech signal and transmits the unique tag representing the speech element as ob- tained from the memory.

    • It is the aim of the present invention to provide a method and a system enabling a subscriber to originate various call handling features which might be in addition number and/or time selective.These objective are achieved according to the present invention by a method allowing a subscriber (100) to use call handling features on a call by call basis, said method comprising the steps of: a) defining a plurality of feature profiles (137) , each comprising a number of call handling features (CCW, SCND, CFBL) ; b) storing the feature profiles (137) either in a customer premises equipment (CPE) or in a related switch (110) ; c) activating one of the feature profiles (137) by selecting one of the feature profiles (137) and applying the call handling features (CCW, SCND, CFBL) in the feature profile (137) to the calls as long as the feature profile (137) is activated. These method steps according to the present invention offers the opportunity to the subscriber to apply a selectable number of call handling features assigned to one feature profile to his outgoing and/or incoming calls. By defining a plurality of profiles the subscriber is enabled to select a distinct combination of preferred features by selecting the respective profile. Of course, this profile can be defined in a way that it is only active for the next originating call and deactivate itself after the call is terminated.

    • A method and system are provided for converging time division multiplexing (TDM) communication networks and packet based networks. Signaling may be monitored between TDM network ele ments by a Convergence Resource Manager (CRM) to identify calls that may be re-directed over a packet network to an end node with another associated CRM; the re-directed call bypassing much of the TDM network. Installation of a CRPd typically does not require any configuration changes to the TDM network such as point codes. A self learning CRM may also be provided so that a routing database may be automatically built. An originating SS7 message may be modified by a self learning CRM to add a Tag which identifies the originating node. As the modified message traverses the SS7 network, any other self learning CRMS in the network report to the originating self learning CRM that the message has been seen. The last reporting self learning CRM is then associated with the dialed number for future routing of originating calls over the packet network, directly to the last reporting self learning CRM and end network node, thus flattening the TDM network.

    • A method and apparatus that filters audio data received from a speaking person that includes a specific filter for that speaker. The audio characteristics of the speaker's voice may be collected and the specific filter may be formed to reduce noise while also enhancing voice quality. For instance, if a speaker's voice does not contain specific frequencies, then a filter may cancel the noise at such frequencies to ease noise cancellation and reduce processing sound spectrum for cleaning that is not needed. Additionally, the strength frequencies of a speaker's voice may be identified from the collected audio characteristics and those spectrums can be filtered with finer granularity to provide a speaker specific filter that enhances the voice quality of the speaker's voice data that is transmitted or output by a communication device. The audio data may also be output based upon a user's predefined hearing spectrum.
