Radiations, treating diseases with. - Radioactive material of very low activity is applied by means of adhesive varnish to an applicator which is secured in place over the part oi the body to be treated and is left in position for a considerable period. The applicator may be connected t.) a source of electricity and an electric heating element may be mounted thereon. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the active material 4 is applied to a dished laminated celluloid backing 1 formed with a flange 2 covered with a ring 3 of felt &c. The celluloid may be replaced by metal or stiffened fabric and may have ventilation holes, and the active material may be applied to a disc of textile fabric loose within the applicator or secured thereto. A layer of thin fabric, which may be absorbent, may be arranged loosely or secured between the active substance and the part of the body to be treated. The applicators may be secured in place by adhesive strips, tapes, straps, bandages &c. and may be shaped to particular parts of the body. Fig. 11 shows a fexible appliance in which active material 16 is applied to both sides of flannel 15 coated or impregnated with elastic varnish. The front of the applicator is covered with thin silk fabric 17 and a backing 18 of thick woollen fabric or flexible metal such as lead is provided. Numerous other constructional forms of applicator are described, some of which may form part of a gorment such as a stocking or may be secured between the fabric of a garment and its lining. In one series, sheets of aluminium &c. carrying the active substance are mounted in recesses in a rubber sheet or cap or at the back of apertures therein. Masks with openings over the part to be treated may be employed to protect the surrounding parts. Various radio-active substances which may be used are specified.

    • A plasma sample collection device includes an elongated blood separation strip having a constant width and a relatively narrower end portion. A support base is located under the plasma separator strip and a cover is positioned superincumbent with respect to the blood separator strip. The cover defines an elongated observation window extending along the length of the plasma separator strip. An oblong collection port is adjacent to but spaced from one end of the observation window. The oblong collection port exposes the separator strip end portion and has a chief axis substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the blood separation strip. In one embodiment, the collection port has a teardrop configuration, and in another embodiment it has an obovate-cuneate configuration.
