    • An HME unit (50) including a housing (52) an HME media (54), and a check valve assembly (56). The housing (52) forms a first port (58), a second port (60), and an intermediate section (62) defining first and second flow paths fluidly connecting the first (58) and second ports. The HM media (54) is maintained within the intermediate section (62) along the second flow path. The check valve assembly (56) includes an obstruction member (80) movably positioned within the intermediate section (62) to selectively provide opened and closed positions. In the opened position, the first flow path is open relative to the obstruction member (80). In the closed position, the obstruction member (80) closes the first flow path. In one mode, the obstruction member (80) transitions to the opened position in response to gas flow in a flow direction from the second port (60) toward the first port (58), and transitions to the' closed position in response to gas flow in an opposite flow direction.

The housing (52) forms an intermediate section (62) extending between two ports (58,60), and defining first and second flow paths. The HM media (54) is maintained along the first flow path. The valve mechanism (56) includes an obstruction member (100) movably retained within the housing (52) and transitionable between opposing, first and second maximum points of travel. At the first maximum point of travel, the obstruction member (100) closes the second flow path to permit airflow through only the first flow path. At the second maximum point of travel, the obstruction member (100) permits airflow through both of the first and second flow paths. The HME unit (50) is simple to use, yet provides an effective bypass state in which airflow freely progresses around the HM media (54).

    • A heat and moisture exchange unit (50) for use with a patient breathing circuit (10). The unit includes a housing (52), an MDI port (56) assembly and a heat and moisturizing medium (54). The housing forms (52) a patient-side port (58), a ventilator-side port (60), and a containment region between the patient-side port (58) and the ventilator-side port (60). The MDI port (56) assembly includes a frame (80) projecting into the containment region and configured to receive a portion of a metered dose dispenser. The frame (80) terminates at an outlet (82) end, forming a flow passage (84). The heat and moisturizing medium (54) is maintained within the containment region so as to define a medium face most proximate the outlet end of the MDI port (56) assembly. The unit (16) is characterized by the absence of a body between the outlet (82) end and the medium face.
