    • A linear drive system for reversibly operating a wheelchair ramp or other mobility access device is provided. The drive system for the mobility access device includes an actuator and a drive apparatus coupled thereto for moving the access device or portion thereof The actuator, which may be a hydraulic cylinder, electric actuator or the like, has a linearly moving arm that cooperates with the drive apparatus including a gear rack and a spur gear. The gear rack is coupled to the moving arm and mates with the spur gear that rotates on a shaft in response to the linear movement of the moving arm. A drive link is coupled with the spur gear for pivoting about the shaft to deploy and stow the access device.

    • A ramp cover mechanism for a wheelchair ramp system is provided. The wheelchair ramp system may include a flip-over ramp, which may have one or more ramp sections, that is hingedly connected to a mounting enclosure located within the vehicle threshold. A link is attached to the ramp and operates to deploy and stow the ramp in response to a drive system such as a hydraulic linear or rotary actuator. The link rests below the vehicle floor when the ramp is stowed generally flat on top of the vehicle threshold, and when the ramp is deployed, a cover plate adjacent the link is moved to conceal a gap left by the link when extended to deploy the ramp. In one embodiment, the cover plate is normally biased toward a horizontal orientation and the ramp cover mechanism includes a rotating cam that cooperates with an articulated lever assembly to raise and lower the cover plate. The cam rotates relative to the orientation of the ramp and the articulated lever assembly and may include a first link with a cam follower and a second link coupled to the first link and generally perpendicular thereto for moving the cover plate. In another embodiment, the ramp cover is normally biased toward a vertical orientation and the ramp cover mechanism includes a flexible link that is tensioned as the ramp is deployed to overcome the normal bias of the ramp cover thereby moving the cover plate to a horizontal orientation.

The drive system (100) for the mobility access device includes an actuator (16) and a drive apparatus coupled thereto for moving the access device or portion thereof . The actuator (16), which may be a hydraulic cylinder, electric actuator or the like, has a linearly moving arm that cooperates with the drive apparatus including a gear rack (20) and a spur gear (22).     • An access system (10) for passenger boarding of a vehicle (V) is provided. The access system includes a frame (12) mounted to the vehicle. A ramp (20) is movably mounted in the frame. The ramp is movable with respect to the frame between a stowed position and a deployed position with respect to the vehicle. The ramp includes side barriers (280, 290) extending therealong between an inboard end (220a) and an outboard end (220b) of the ramp. The side barriers are movable between a stowed orientation and a raised safety barrier orientation by an actuator (250, 260). The vehicular access system includes a frame positioned below the floor level of a vehicle to which a carriage (18) is moveably mounted. The ramp or transfer member is attached to the carriage by a pivoting rocker assembly (32). A drive assembly (14, 16) deploys and stows the ramp from the frame. An actuator is moveable between a raised safety barrier orientation and a stowed low-profile orientation with a side barrier that is pivotably mounted and spring biased toward the stowed low-profile orientation. The rocker assembly and actuator are operable with the drive assembly to raise the inboard end of the ramp to the floor level of the vehicle and to pivot the side barrier to the raised safety barrier orientation as the ramp is deployed.
