A tapping sleeve comprises a back-up member 18, Fig. 2, and a branch member 16 adapted to clamp a pipe therebetween, the branch member having a passage 32 communicating with a partcylindrical portion, a sealing member 44 forming a sealing boundary which diverges from the passage opening ,as it extends from a pair of points 52 on the part-cylindrical surface on opposite ends of a diameter of the opening which is parallel to the length of the partcylindrical portion, the back-up member comprising a part-cylindrical surface having a relieved central portion and resilient side portions which provide a cushion support for the pipe. Each tapping sleeve comprises two separate halves each having saddle portions 16, 18, Fig. 2, and flanges (20, 22), Fig. 1 (not shown), clamped together by nut and bolt assemblies (24). Recessed surface 46 is joined to the outer surface 47 by wall 47a against which the sealing member 44 is pressed by the fluid pressure. The sealing member has a pair of circumferentially-extending legs joined to longitudinally extending legs by corners 58. Resilient pads 72, Fig. 3, in saddle portion 18 engage the lower half of pipe 10. The areas of the openings 27, 60 and the area enclosed by the sealing boundary are chosen so that the fluid pressure exerts a net force on saddle portion 10 towards pipe 10. In further embodiments the branch opening (74), Fig. 9 (not shown) is smaller than the bore of the main pipe; the sealing member has circumferentially extending legs widely spaced from the branch opening high points (91), Fig. 10 (not shown) and curved therefrom into the longitudinally extending legs; the sealing member (118), Fig. 12 (not shown), has curved circumferential and longitudinally extending legs and the branch member has ridges (146), Fig. 15 (not shown) on its cylindrical surface to abut the sealing member. In other modifications various forms of abutment surfaces for the sealing member are described.

    • A fire hydrant having an improved means for securing a cover plate to the upper standpipe section of the hydrant. The cover plate rests on the upper surface of the upper standpipe section and has an annular flange which projects into the upper standpipe section and against the inner surface thereof to form an annular cavity and to limit relative lateral movement. Shear pins are positioned in special bores in top of the upper standpipe section and extend into the cavity where they limit movement of the cover plate axially away from the upper standpipe section. A compressed resilient washer seals and secures each shear pin in its bore.
