[Class 123 (ii)] [See also Group XII] A steam boiler comprises a chamber in which partial combustion of air and a fluid fuel is effected and a second chamber to which additional air is supplied for flameless combustion of the mixture in close proximity to steam generator tubes. Water is fed through a pipe 51 to a preheating coil 47 connected at its other end through a pipe 52 to a perforated coil 28 extending within the tubing of a coil 27 in which the issuing streams are flashed into steam passing to a superheater coil 30. Air is heated in a coil 48 and supplied through a chamber 16a and ducts 16b to a flared passage 19b and a conduit 21. Oil and steam are supplied through pipes 13, 14, and the mixture is ignited by a spark plug 56, the air supply to a primary combustion chamber C formed by a refractory cylinder 20 being insufficient for complete combustion. The gases pass through channels 26, 23, to a porous cylinder 24 combustion occurring' while the gases penetrate the cylinder. The hot products are discharged from the superheater chamber into a gas turbine or engine T whence they traverse a helical chamber 43 containing the water and air coils 47, 48. The burner valve is automatically operated by means of a rod 39 and rock arms 38, 40, which are actuated by a shaft 35 and fitting 29 caused to rotate by the expansion of the coils 27, 30. A spark plug 60 ignites the gaseous mixture on the cylinder surface 24a until a sufficient heat is reached. The steam supply is dispensed with if gas is used instead of oil.
