    • 787,685. Nailing. REICH, K. M., and REICH, K., [trading as REICH, K. M. [Firm of]]. July 27,1955 [July 27,1954], No. 21684/55. Class 89(3) A peg, pin, rivet, stud or the like is inserted into a solid body under the direct action of compressed air which drives the peg through a tube with a diameter corresponding to the largest diameter of the peg, the diameter and the length of the tube being. such that the terminal velocity of the peg achievable in such length is sufficient to drive the peg into the solid body to the required depth. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, a nail 3 1 which has been fed from a nail runway 13, occupies a position in a bore 18 of a member 19 to which is secured the rear end of the tube 1. Actuation of a control 7, Fig. 1, at the front end 5 of the tube 1 energizes an electricsolenoid which rotates a member 12 about a vertical axis with the results that, firstly a passage 14 1 in the member 12 is turned out of alignment with the passage 14 in a housing 11 which is thereby closed, and secondly an abutment 31, Fig. 6, on the member 12 strikes a stem 29 of a valve 23 which is thereby opened to allow compressed air from a line 32 to flow into the passage 15 and to impel the nail 3 1 along the tube 1 and into the workpiece 6 at the front end 5 of the tube 1. A plate 42 at the upper end of the member 12 has a notch 43 which upon the rotation of the member 12 moves into alignment with the slotted runway 13 to receive a single nail which is delivered by way of a shaft 17 and passage 14 into the bore 18 when the solenoid is de-energized to allow return rotation of the member 12. Upon return rotation of the member 12 the valve 23 closes and shuts off supply of compressed air to the passage 15. Mechanical coupling such as a flexible wire drive may be used as an alternative to electrical coupling between the control 7 and the member 12. The tube 1 may be flexible for at least part of its length. In another embodiment, Fig. 10, a control valve 80 which may be mounted at the front end of the tube 1 is operable to admit compressed air from a source 86 into a cylinder 47 to urge a spring loaded piston 45 to the left thereby placing a compressed air source 32 1 in communication with a conduit 50 and cylinder 51 to urge to the left a spring loaded piston 52 which closes the passage 57 and uncovers a passage 58 through which the compressed air passes to impel a nail 3 1 from the rear end of the tube 1 along the tube 1 and into the workpiece. Movement to the left of the piston 45 also displaces a notched plate 62 so that a nail 3 from a slotted runway 13 is delivered into a chamber 60, this nail being allowed to pass through the passage 57 into the rear end of the tube 1 upon subsequent return movement of the pistons 45 and 52 when the valve 80 is released. In a modification the slotted runway 13 may be associated with a rocking supply box, Fig. 9 (not shown), the bottom of which is formed with a slot which constitutes a continuation of the slot in the runway. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the tube 1 is formed with a coiled portion in order to bring the front and back ends of the tube 1 into close proximity with each other and allow nails to be introduced manually in to the rear end of the tube 1.

Class 145 (i) A hand plane comprises a casing 1 within which is mounted an electric motor the rotor of which is provided with cutting tools 3. A tunnel 5 for the ejection of shavings is provided in the one-piece casing 1 and a wedgeshaped member 6 is adjustable by means of a screw 15 for determining the thickness or depth of cut. In a modification the front handle 18 may be so arranged, as by eccentrics and links, that the member 6 may be adjusted by mere rotation of the handle 18. If feet are provided whereby the plane is supported with its sole or base 7, 10 uppermost the plane may serve as a trueing machine. It may also be supported in inverted manner in a frame 42, Fig. 10, so that its sole 7, 10 may operate on a work piece 43. In addition the frame 42 is provided with a table 44 adjustable by means of gears 49, 50 so that the cutters 3, the rotor cover 4 being removed, may also serve for trueing and thicknessing. A pulley 75 may be detachably secured to the rotor and so serves by means of a belt to drive pressure and feed rollers 52, 51.

    • 660,421. Wood cutting tools. REICH, K. M., REICH, K., (trading as REICH, K. M. Firm of), and WALLISER, G. May 19, 1949, No. 13369/49. Class 145 (i) [Also in Group XXXV] In a wood planing machine employing an electric motor having an external rotor the cutting tools are mounted directly on such rotor. As shown the rotor cylinder comprises laminations of annular discs 1 held together by end rings 2 and bolts &c. 5 passing through apertures 4. In addition bracket bearing rings 6 are secured to the ends of the rotor by bolts 8, these rings 6 being provided with ball bearings 22 whereby the rotor is enabled to rotate about the fixed shaft 7 carrying the stator 9. The cutters 11 are mounted, directly to such rotor, in recesses 10 in the exterior surface and are held in position by studs 13 and strips 12, the strips conforming to the curvature of the rotor. The studs 13 are arranged to enter the laminations 1, rings 2 and end bearing rings 6. In a modification one or more steel rings may be disposed intermediately of the discs 1 and the studs 13 may engage them. In another modification the laminations 1 may be dispensed with and replaced by a metal cylinder.
