    • The invention relates to alkene-substituted cyclic carboxylic acid anhydrides which are formed from the reaction product of a cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride, preferably succinic acid anhydride, and an olefin blend. The olefin blend is made up of internal linear and branched olefins and linear and/or branched alpha -olefins, in which blend the olefins contain 13-25 carbon atoms, and the internal and alpha -olefins are present at a ratio of 5-95 % to 95-5 %. The invention also relates to methods for the preparation of these compounds from a carboxylic acid anhydride and the said olefin blend, which is prepared by oligomerizing a so-called Raffinate II stream containing 1-butene and 2-butene, by pyrolyzing a high molecular weight polyethylene, and by separating from the obtained product the olefin fraction which primarily contains 13-25 carbon atoms or by dehydrogenating a blend of suitable alcohols to the said olefin blend. The obtained alkene-substituted cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride can be used in particular for the preparation of an ASA sizing agent suitable for paper sizing; this sizing agent has been observed to have excellent efficacy in reducing permeability to water.

    • In the preparation of an alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) from an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon and a maleic anhydride, a mixture of additives is used in the preparation reaction in order to improve the yield of the product and to reduce side reactions. According to the present invention, a mixture of an aromatic compound which contains nitrogen and sulfur, preferably benzothiazole or phenothiazine or derivatives thereof, and a phenolic antioxidant or a derivative thereof has such properties. The amount of each additive is approx. 0.01-5 mol.% of the amount of maleic anhydride. The olefin is preferably a straight-chain alpha -olefin or a straight-chain or branched internal olefin having a carbon chain length of 6-20 carbon atoms. The olefin may also be a polyolefin, in which case the preferred molecular weight is 900-1500. The preparation process may be of the batch type or the semi-batch type, and the maleic anhydride and the additive may be added in several batches or as a continuous feed which may be even or variable. The ASA obtained by the process may be used in particular as an additive in foods, for hydrophobic sizing of paper, or as a dispersing agent in lubricants.

    • The application relates to a process for the oligomerization of olefins, preferably a hydrocarbon blend which contains 1-butenes and/or 2-butenes, for example the so-called Raffinate II stream and cyclic aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbons, by means of BF3 and a cocatalyst. The aromatic hydrocarbon may preferably be styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, alkyl styrene, or a blend thereof, and the alicyclic hydrocarbon may be vinyl cyclohexane, vinyl cyclohexene, or a blend thereof. The cocatalyst is an aliphatic alcohol, carboxylic acid or inorganic acid. The oligomerization may be carried out with or without a medium, at a temperature above 0 DEG C, by adjusting the pressure to 1-10 bar by means of BF3 gas. The oligomer prepared by the process may be used as a solvent or an additive in fuels or lubricants, in surfactants, in white and cosmetic oils requiring extra purity, and in PVC and polyolefin plastics. In polyester and vinyl ester resins this oligomer can be used for replacing in part the monomer (e.g. styrene), thus reducing monomer evaporation and to inhibit shrinkage at the hardening stage, and it also improves the optical properties of the said resins.

    • The application relates to a process for the oligomerization of aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbons by means of a complex made up of BF3 and a cocatalyst. The aromatic hydrocarbon may preferably be styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, or a mixture thereof, and the alicyclic hydrocarbon may be vinyl cyclohexane, vinyl cyclohexene, allyl cyclohexane, allyl cyclohexene, or a mixture thereof. The cocatalyst is an aliphatic alcohol, carboxylic acid, or inorganic acid. The oligomerization may be performed with or without a medium, at a temperature above 0 DEG C, the pressure being adjusted by means of BF3 to 1 - 10 bar. An oligomer prepared by the process can be used as a solvent or an additive in fuels or lubricants, in surfactants, in white oils and cosmetic oils requiring extra purity, and in PVC and polyolefin plastics. In polyester and vinyl ester resins this oligomer can be used to replace in part a monomer (e.g. styrene), thus reducing the evaporation of monomer, and to inhibit shrinkage at the hardening stage, and it also improves the optical properties of the said resins.
