    • In order to realize liquid crystal display devices having a wide viewing angle and reduce the absorption loss by polarizers and color filters, and arrangement of reflective color selective means, reflective polarizing selective means, a light control element, and others are specified. The liquid crystal display device able to produce a display of high performance and improved brightness is formed of liquid crystal display elements 20 for controlling polarizing light so that the major axis direction of a pixel is arranged approximately in parallel with a direction wherein the linearly polarized light component of the projected light projected from said illumination device is high; an illumination device 50 arranged at a rear plane of the liquid crystal display element; a reflector 54 arranged at a rear plane of the illumination device; light control elements 40 and reflective polarizing selective means 30 arranged between the liquid crystal display element and the illumination device; and a screen arranged at an opposite side relative to the illumination device of the liquid crystal display element.

    • A liquid crystal display device is disclosed, which comprises a liquid crystal cell including a first substrate having a first electrode, a second substrate having a second electrode, which is opposite to the first substrate, and a nematic liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; a first polarizer disposed outside of the first substrate; a second polarizer disposed outside of the second substrate; and at least one optically anisotropic layer disposed at least one of between the first substrate and the first polarizer and between the second substrate and the second polarizer. The twist angle of the nematic liquid crystal layer is greater than 180.degree.; and the following conditions are fulfilled: ##EQU1## where .DELTA.n.sub.LC represents a birefringence of the nematic liquid crystal; d.sub.LC a thickness of the nematic liquid crystal layer; .DELTA.n.sub.i a birefringence of the optically anisotropic layer; d.sub.i a thickness of the optically anisotropic layer; and m a number of optically anisotropic layers.

    • A display device, which is adapted for time-division driving and is free from occurrence of crosstalk, includes a pair of substrates which are arranged to be opposite to each other and at least one of which is transparent, electrodes provided respectively on surfaces of the substrates facing each other, and a material which is sandwiched between the electrodes and the light transmitting quantity of which is changed by an electric field applied between the electrodes. The electrodes formed on the surfaces of the substrates facing each other constitute scanning electrodes and signal electrodes which intersect each other to form display portions. The signal electrodes constitutes independent electrodes formed independently of each other in units of display portions. Outside leads of the respective independent electrodes are passed through the substrate provided with the electrodes and are led out to the back surface of the substrate.
