Protecting and insulating means for the lead-in foil seal f, g of a discharge tube comprises a s u bstantially cylindrical shroud a made of a heat and electrical insulating material such as a ceramic secured in stable and spaced relation around the lead-in foil seal, the shroud being formed with a circumferential series of apertures h to allow cooling of the lead-in foil seal and being removably secured to a sleeve or canister k removably clamped around the end of the discharge tube. The shroud a is formed at one end with a cavity b of hexagonal or other polygonal section to receive a correspondingly shaped part c of an end fitting formed with a hollow connecting pin d. The lead-in wire f is connected to the foil g by soldering and passes through the hollow connecting-pin d in which it is held by nipping. The circumferential series of holes h are so placed that electrical contact cannot easily be made through the holes with the lead-in wire f. At the other end the shroud a is formed with an external lip i having recesses or indentations j at diametrically opposite points engaging with projections m on the turned-over edge l in the sleeve k. The sleeve k is secured in position by an adjustable encircling clip p which can be tightened by screws q.

Labelling.-In machines for applying labels to tins and like cylindrical articles, in which the article is seized bv camactuated grippers carried on rctating discs and caused to rotate against a wiper which presses a label against its surface, both sets of grippers are mounted on stems sliding in the discs, and one set is rotated by toothed wheels on the stems engaging with a fixed circular rack, the other set being free to rotate. The stems of the grippers 5 on the. wheel 3 pass through and rotate with pinions 10 attached to the wheel and engaging with a circular rack 9. The stems of the grippers 6 on the wheel 4 pass freely through openings in the wheel. The wheels 3, 4 are mounted on the same shaft and bring the grippers 5, 6 into engagement with cam surfaces 26, 27 which cause them to seize a tin as it emerges from a shoot, bring it against a gummed label fed into position by pneumatic or other pickers, pass it under a wiper and release it so that it escapes by a second shoot.

Air-pressure sprayers. - A paint sprayer consists of a casing 1, Fig. 1, provided with two parallel holes 2, 11 for air and paint respectively; in the upper is fixed an axially-perforated plug 3 having a flange 5 at its outer end provided with a groove 6, Fig. 2, in its face, and in the lower passage a valve 16 which may be operated against the action of a spring 18 by means of a handle 40. The conical end of the valve 16 controls an opening 12 by which paint under pressure is led to the passage 11 and thence by an inclined port 6 to the passage 4. Before the port 6 is opened the coned inner end of the valve 16 engages the stem 29 of a spring-pressed valve 28, which allows compressed air from a pipe 23 to pass through an opening 26 to the space behind the plug 3, whence it passes partly through the passage 4 and also through passages 7 to the groove 6. Attached by a union nut 8 to the plug 3 is a nozzle head 10 having a central bore 44 surrounded by a number of small holes 45 communicating with the groove 6. Paint and air are ejected through the central hole and air through the holes 45. Integral with the nozzle is a chamber 46 converging to form a narrow fanshaped outlet 47, Fig. 4. To facilitate cleaning, the paint pipe 14 may be removed and air allowed to blow through all the passages. The parts are mounted on a hand-grip 33.

    • Tool includes a fixed handle and a movable, lockable handle. A working end of the tool includes an upper jaw and a movable lower jaw. A passage may be provided in one or both of upper and lower jaws. A sealing device may be provided in the upper jaw, the sealing device being disposed adjacent to the passage. Lower jaw may likewise include a passage therein. In use, an elongated object such as a tube may be inserted into the passage in the lower jaw and then into the passage in the upper jaw adjacent the sealing device. When the lower jaw is engaged with the upper jaw, the lower jaw compresses the sealing device and sealingly engages the sealing device, the passage, and the tube disposed therein. In that manner, a seal is achieved. In the case where an opening having a coupling is fluidly connected to the upper jaw, a sealed, fluid connection may be established between the coupling on the upper jaw and the tube engaged by the seal.
