[Class 60] Castings of zinc or brass, stampings or castings of steel, stainless steel, nickel, silver, gold, or platinum or other metal articles or parts have their surfaces ground by tumbling with chips or pellets of bone, vegetable ivory, synthetic resin, hard tree root, or the like and abrasive, lubricating, and adhesive materials. The abrasive may comprise coarse or fine pumice, emery, or carborundum or precipitated chalk, infusional earth, tripoli or other abrasive flour with thin mineral oil, oleic acid, or a mixture of trisodium phosphate, soap, tallow. and water, and with tallow, steric acid, red oil, petroleum or other fatty substance. If the articles are free from fine recesses the abrasive material may be applied to sawdust, wood chips, leather particles or other fibrous material, after applying lubricant, this being added to the articles and chips. The tumbling barrel is half filled with a mixture consisting of one part by volume of metal articles, two to three parts of bony chips, and a variable amount of abrasive material, particular examples being given in the Specification. The articles to treated may be given a high lustre by tumbling with fibrous material, such as wood pegs, and fine abrasive.

    • 589,052. Rumbles and tumbling- barrels. LUPO, J. Sept. 7, 1944, No. 17126. [Class 60] A method of processing articles consists in first tumbling them in a completely closed receptacle for a pre-determined length of time, together with a tumbling mixture, said mixture comprising particles of material which may be coated with an abrasive and tumbling elements of larger size than said particles, both the particles and the tumbling elements being of smaller size than the articles to be processed, then, without removing the articles to be processed, continuing the tumbling operation in the same receptacle while simultaneously separating and discharging the particles from the articles and the elements of the tumbling mixture in the receptacle, whereafter tumbling of the articles in said receptacle may be continued with the tumbling elements alone. Apparatus comprises two horizontally mounted tumbling barrels B, selectively driven through clutches E and countershaft D by electric motor C. The barrels are enclosed in a openfronted housing A, having a partition 13 between the barrels, the compartments thus formed being provided with doors J comprising hinged sections 30 and 31. Each barrel has a charging opening 15 which can be closed either by a solid plate 16 or a screen mesh panel 17. Sieves F, G and a trundle box H are provided inside the housing under the barrels. In operation, the door J is opened, and the mixture of articles, tumbling elements and particles introduced into the barrel through the charging opening which is then closed by the solid cover. After tumbling for the required time, the solid cover is removed and replaced by the screen mesh panel. On further rotation of the barrel, the particles escape through the mesh, pass through the sieves, and are collected in the trundle box, tumbling proceeding with the articles and tumbling elements. After completion of this operation, the contents of the barrel are discharged, the articles being retained by the sieve F and the tumbling elements by the sieve G. In a modification the tumbling elements are of two sizes, and two screen meshes are provided, one permitting passage as before of particles, and the other of the smaller tumbling elements.

    • 529,104. Tumbling-barrels. LUPO, J. May 12, 1939, No. 14256. [Class 60] A tumbling-barrel comprises a shell 10 of sheet metal bent to form an octagonal, or other shaped barrel, the ends of the sheet being spaced apart to leave an opening along one flat face of the barrel. At each end, the shell 10 is screwed, at 14 to a wooden head 11 forming a barrel end, the heads 11 each having secured on its outer face a metal sheet 12 flanged at 15 over the shell 10, and at 16 over the head 11. Extending along the end edges of the shell are metal straps 17, 18 which strengthen the barrel opening and serve to retain a cover or door, the straps being secured to the heads 11 by screws 19. The barrel is lined with removable wooden end sections 20, and removable longitudinal sections 21 extending between the sections 20 and having bevelled abutting edges, the sections all being held in position by screws 23 passing through the straps 17, 18 and the ends of the shell 10. The cover comprises a wooden part 26 with a metal cover 27, the wooden part being rabetted at 28 to receive felt gaskets 29, and the outer surface of the cover having secured thereto a metal reinforcing frame 30. The cover is held in position by lugs 31 on the strap 17 and clips 35 pressed down by nuts 36 on screw studs 32 in the strap 18. A partition 24, 25 may be provided in the barrel, and screened ventilating openings 40, 41 with pivoted covers 43 may be provided in the barrel ends; trunnions 37 are secured by screws 39 to the barrel ends.
