    • This invention relates to an electrical cable extension reel (10) with a safety switch. More specifically, the invention relates to an electrical cable extension reel (10) having a safety switch thereon that renders the extension reel (10) electrically inoperable unless the cable is wholly unwound from the reel. The electrical cable extension reel (10) includes a spool (12) having a first electrical connector (28), a length of cable capable of being wound and unwound from the spool (12) and connected at a first end to the spool (12) and at a second end to a second electrical connector, an actuator (18 A, 18 B) mounted on the spool (12) and a safety switch (20) electrically connected between the cable and first electrical connector (28). The actuator (18 A, 18 B) is co-operative with the safety switch (20) and movable relative to the spool (12) between an operative condition and an inoperative condition. In th operative condition, an end of the actuator (18 A, 18 B) lies in close proximity with the spool (12). In the inoperative condition, the same end of the actuator (18 A, 18 B) is distal from the spool (12), the actuator (18 A, 18 B) being retainable in the operative condition by at least a single winding of the cable onto the spool (12). Consequentially, the safety switch (20) is actuated by the actuator (18 A, 18 B) between an electrically "on" condition, coinciding with the operative condition of the actuator (18 A, 18 B), and an electrically "off" condition, coinciding with the inoperative condition of the actuator (18 A, 18 B). In the electrically "on" condition, electrical continuity between the cable and the first electrical connector (28) in maintained by the safety switch (20). In the electrically "off" condition, the safety switch (20) breaks electrical continuity between the cable and the first electrical connector (28). In this manner, with the cable unwound from the spool (12), the reel is electrically operable while conversely, with the cable wound or partially wound on the spool (12), the reel is rendered electrically inoperable.
