    • Systems and methods are provided for editing an image of a vehicle interior to isolate the occupant of a vehicle seat. An image generator (102) generates an image of a vehicle interior. A contour generator (104) produces a contour image from the generated image. A model selector (106) selects a contour model from a plurality of contour models according to the similarity of the contour model to a portion of the contour image. An image editor (108) removes a portion of the generated image representing at least a portion of the vehicle seat according to the selected contour model to produce an image of an occupant of the vehicle seat.

    • Systems and methods are provided for identifying a position of a head of a vehicle occupant from a plurality of images of a vehicle interior. Image data is translated from the plurality of images to produce a virtual side view image of the vehicle interior (162). A largest grouping of pixels in the side view image having values within a desired range is identified (164). The grouping includes a plurality of pixel columns. A contour including uppermost pixels of each pixel column is produced and peaks are located within the contour (166). The contour peaks are analyzed according to a heuristic voting algorithm to identify a peak location associated with the head of the vehicle occupant (172).

    • A system (400) for classifying an input image into one of a plurality of output classes includes a plurality of pattern recognition classifiers (420, 422, 424). Each of the plurality of pattern recognition classifiers determines a candidate output class and at least one rejected output class for the input image from an associated subset of the plurality of output classes. Each classifier generates a confidence value associated with the classifier based on the determination. An arbitrator (430) selects a classifier having the best associated confidence value and eliminates the at least one rejected class determined at the selected classifier from consideration as the associated class for the input image.

    • A method for helping to control a vehicle occupant protection device (22) includes taking an image of the vehicle interior with a digital imager (50) having an array of pixels (53). A contiguous portion of the image less than the entire image is selected. At least one image enhancement technique is applied to the selected image portion. The enhanced image portion is combined with the other portions of the image to make an enhanced image. The enhanced image is analyzed to detect at least one of features and characteristics of the enhanced image. Alternatively, a selected non-contiguous group of the pixels (53) of the imager (50) are read out, as representative of the entire image, to estimate the illumination levels across the entire array of pixels. In one aspect, the imager shutter (56) speed may be controlled to enhance the image.
