    • The invention comprises a support structure for an elevator system comprising a pit channel module having a first leg and a second leg connected at a corner, a header module having three sides forming a triangle which is disposed in a horizontal plane above the pit channel module, and pairs of car guide rails and counterweight guide rails extending vertically from the pit channel module to the header module. Vertical forces generated within the system are transferred from the rails through the pit channel module and into a foundation so that at least substantially no vertical load forces are imparted on the building structure which the system serves.

    • A brake apparatus engages and locks a piston of a hydraulic elevator drive carrying an elevator car or a cable pulley. The brake apparatus includes a pair of opposed pivotally mounted brake arms each having a curved support carrying a brake lining for engaging the exterior surface of the piston. Each brake lining is formed by bending a planar body at a plurality of the vertical grooves formed in a contact surface to define planar sections. The lining is attached to the support with the sections spaced from the curved support surface. As the brake linings are brought into engagement with the piston surface, the compression forces are evenly distributed by the planar sections functioning as springs.

    • This invention includes a brake system for a hydraulic ram or another cylinder, that can be employed as an emergency brake for a lifting elevator. When actuated, the brake arms contact the ram circumferentially to slow and stop the falling ram. The brake arms are preferably lined with an able material that frictionally engages the ram to stop the downward motion of the ram. The brake system may be actuated by loss of hydraulic pressure, by an electronic signal from a hydraulic pressure detector, by down overspeed sensor or by an uncontrolled down motion detector. According to another aspect of the present invention, a controller, which is preferably a programmed control system, compares the actual motion of the elevator as sensed by a detector to a desired motion. Under certain conditions, if the actual motion differs from the desired motion, the controller actuates the brake.

    • An arrestor for any hydraulic ram or other cylinder but primarily for an emergency brake for lifting elevators. The present invention is a jack arrestor utilizing two lever acting brake arms lined with an accretable metal as the friction material. When actuated, the brake arms contact the ram circumferentially to slow and stop the falling ram. The lining material is machined inside the brake arms to a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the ram and when actuated, the accretable material on the brake arms contacts the ram with sufficient frictional force to stop the downward motion of the ram. The safety brake may be actuated by loss of hydraulic pressure, by an electronic signal from a hydraulic pressure detector, by down overspeed or by an uncontrolled down motion detector. In the case of the hydraulic pressure detector, reapplication of normal pressure in the hydraulic cylinder will automatically reset the brake.

    • A safety brake device (1) for hydraulic elevators acts by arresting the axial movement of the elevator ram (3) with respect to the main hydraulic cylinder (5) of the elevator.
