Carbon.-Active carbon is produced from bituminous coal. or other carbonaceous material which will evolve combustible gases when heated, by injecting the powdered material with a limited quantity of air into a retort at a temperature of about 800‹ C. or over, e.g. 800-1000‹ C., the material being partially burnt and being maintained in the products of combustion until it is activated. The retort may be of elongated form and circular cross-section and may be vertically or horizontally disposed. The material which may be coal dust or other cheap material may be injected tangentially. The walls of the retort are preferably lined with magnesite or other refractory material promoting surface combustion. Acid may be added to the raw material or directly to the retort to render the atmosphere acid during the activation. The results obtained may be controlled by varying the air, combustible gas and the powder supplies, and the pressure within the retort. To obtain more intense combustion the air supply may be preheated and a second air blast may be introduced into the retort at a point below the first inlet. A steam ejector may be provided to withdraw the treated carbon. In an example. the powdered material is fed from a hopper 14 by a screw conveyer 15 into a tube 18 from which it is injected by compressed air, supplied through a pipe 19, through a pipe 13 tangentially into the retort 10. Combustible gas may be introduced through a pipe 20. The retort comprises a metal casing 12 lined with fire- .brick 11. Acid may be introduced through a pipe 21 and a regulating cock 22. The activated carbon is withdrawn through an opening 23 and is distributed by arose 24 in water in a tank 27 from which it is removed by suction through a pipe 25 to a filter press or other separating device. The residual gas which consists largely of carbonic oxide escapes through a pipe 26. The carbon may be cooled or quenched as soon as activation is completed by introducing a water spray at a suitable point 28 in the retort. In one form, the coal dust is introduced with air and coal gas into the retort which has previously been heated to bright red heat by burning coal gas therein. The residual carbon is washed in dilute sulphuric acid. dried and re-treated. In another form in which the activation is effected in one operation, hydrochloric acid is introduced directly into the retort and no combustible gas is used after the preliminary heating. Specifications 206,862, 228,582, and 228,954 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes a preliminary carbonization step in which when the retort is sufficiently heated the supply of combustible gas is shut off.

    • A heating plate for a substrate support assembly in a semiconductor plasma processing apparatus, comprises multiple independently controllable planar heater zones arranged in a scalable multiplexing layout, and electronics to independently control and power the planar heater zones. A substrate support assembly in which the heating plate is incorporated includes an electrostatic clamping electrode and a temperature controlled base plate. Methods for manufacturing the heating plate include bonding together ceramic or polymer sheets having planar heater zones, branch transmission lines, common transmission lines and vias. The heating plate is capable of being driven by AC current or direct current phase alternating power, which has an advantage of minimizing DC magnetic field effects above the substrate support assembly and reduce plasma non-uniformity caused by DC magnetic fields.

    • A system for measuring temperatures of and controlling a multi-zone heating plate in a substrate support assembly used to support a semiconductor substrate in a semiconductor processing includes a current measurement device and switching arrangements. A first switching arrangement connects power return lines selectively to an electrical ground, a voltage supply or an electrically isolated terminal, independent of the other power return lines. A second switching arrangement connects power supply lines selectively to the electrical ground, a power supply, the current measurement device or an electrically isolated terminal, independent of the other power supply lines. The system can be used to maintain a desired temperature profile of the heater plate by taking current readings of reverse saturation currents of diodes serially connected to planar heating zones, calculating temperatures of the heating zones and powering each heater zone to achieve the desired temperature profile.

    • Methods, compositions and kits are disclosed. The compositions are light emitting and comprise a polymeric matrix having dissolved therein a photoactive compound. The composition has the characteristic that, after activation of the photoactive compound, the rate of decrease in the intensity of light emission at any time during a 20-fold decrease in the intensity is proportional to the intensity of the light emission. In one embodiment the polymeric matrix is comprised of particles of about 20 nm to about 100 μm in diameter to which is bound a specific binding pair member. The particles generally comprise a polymeric matrix having dissolved therein about 1 to about 20% by weight of a dopant. The compositions may be used in methods for determining an analyte. A combination is provided comprising (1) a medium suspected of containing the analyte, (2) and the aforementioned composition. The photoactive substance is activated and the effect of the activating on the optical properties of the combination is detected. The presence and amount of the effect is related to the presence and amount of the analyte in the medium. Also disclosed are kits for use in an assay.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling a piezo-electric actuator coupled to a driven member is disclosed. The piezo-electric actuator is responsive to waveforms with asymmetrical voltage/current profiles on the rising and falling edge to effect consistent and cumulative movement of the driven member in one of two directions throughout the reciprocations of the piezo-electric actuator. The waveforms are digitally generated from a stored set of numbers or a function for generating the set of numbers. The numbers correspond with the discrete digital values associated with the desired waveforms for moving the driven member in either of at least two directions. The controller may be used to drive more than one piezo-electric actuator. The controller may include responsiveness to a feedback of the position of the driven member to accurately position the driven member. The controller may also include the ability to update the function or values stored in memory so as to couple more efficiently with new or existing actuators. The controller exhibits a relatively smaller form factor and reduced complexity when compared with prior art analog drivers.
