    • An apparatus (16) includes a canister (72) defining a first hermetically sealed combustion chamber (73). The first combustion chamber (73) contains a source of inflation fluid comprising a body (27) of ignitable gas generating material. The canister (72) has a cylindrical configuration with a longitudinal central axis (79) and first and second opposite end walls (76 and 78). An initiator assembly (28) is located outside the canister (72). When the initiator assembly (28) is actuated, it ruptures the first end wall (76) of the canister (72). It also projects pyrotechnic combustion products into the first combustion chamber (73) to ignite the body (27) of gas generating material in the first combustion chamber (73). The initiator assembly (28) comprises an electrically actuatable igniter (122) and a booster charge (124) of pyrotechnic material which is separate from the igniter (122). The booster charge (124) is contained in a second hermetically sealed combustion chamber (129) which is defined in part by the first end wall (76) of the canister (72), and in part by a booster cover (130) which is fixed to the canister (72).

    • An apparatus for use in inflating a vehicle occupant restraint includes an inflator housing and a canister containing gas generating material. The canister has a resiliently deflectable wall which presses against the inflator housing to hold the canister against movement relative to the inflator housing. A cushion is disposed inside the canister between the wall and the gas generating material. In addition, auto ignition material is disposed in a projecting wall portion of the canister. When the apparatus is assembled, the wall of the canister is resiliently deflected by applying a force against the projecting wall portion of the canister. After the inflator housing has been closed, the canister is retained against movement relative to the inflator housing by the force applied by the resiliently deflected wall of the canister against the inflator housing.

    • An inflator generates gas for inflating a vehicle occupant restraint. The inflator comprises a housing. The housing has a chamber for gas generating material and gas outlet openings through which gas flows from the housing into the restraint. A filter in the housing provides a gas flow path to the gas outlet openings. The filter filters and cools the gas as it flows in the gas flow path. The filter comprises a plurality of filter layers. At least one of the filter layers has a higher resistance to gas flow than at least one other of the filter layers. The filter layer of higher resistance to gas flow has a portion extending between and engaging the housing and the other filter layer to provide a gas flow sealing zone adjacent the housing. The gas flow sealing zone has a resistance to gas flow higher than the resistance to gas flow of the gas flow path.

    • A vehicle occupant safety apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (20) and a container (32) for storing gas (36) under pressure. The pyrotechnic material (70) is ignitable in response to being impacted by the gas (36) flowing from the outlet (38) at supersonic speed. The apparatus (10) further includes a conduit (50) directing at least a first portion of the gas (36) flowing from the container (32) to the pyrotechnic material (70) to ignite the pyrotechnic material.
