    • 985,875. Root-crop harvesters. J M. REEKIE. Jan. 1, 1964 [Oct. 2, 1962], No. 37353/62. Heading A1F. A root-crop harvester includes a substantially flat power-driven member 1 rotatable on the machine about an axis 3 disposed at an acute angle to the ground in the direction from which root-crops are intended to be loaded on to the member, resilient arms 4 being mounted in association with the surface of the member so as to assist in elevating the crops thereon, the resilience of the arms being such that tubers are restrained from relative movement on the disc during normal operation, but tubers of various sizes may be accommodated thereon and the arms are flexible enough to be bent back by the crop should a blockage occur in the flow of crop from the member. The member 1 comprises a disc with corrugations 5 extending tangentially to the hub 2 which carries the arms 4. The member feeds a conveyer (not shown). Two tailing discs 8, 8 1 precede the disc 1 and tail the crop in the nip 9 between them, similar arms 12 being associated with each disc to assist in feeding crop on to the member 1.

    • 878,492. Separating apparatus. RECKIE, J. M. May 4, 1959 [Feb. 4, 1958], No. 3690/58. Class 117. Root crops e.g. potatoes, are delivered by an elevator 10 to a grader 11 consisting of two parts 12 and 13 each of which comprises pairs of rollers 14, Fig. 5, of resilient material, rotatable about parallel 1 horizontal axes, and each roller has resilient ribs 15 which co-operate with the ribs of adjacent rollers to provide a number of rectangular openings 16. The openings in the part 12 are smaller than those in the part 13. Each roller 14 comprises a set of individual rollers mounted on a shaft 17 journalled in a frame 18, each shaft has a sprocket, and an endless chain drives all the shafts. Each roller is kept clean by a brush located below it. Two pairs of dirt removing rollers 20 with spines 22 Fig. 4 are located between the elevator and grader and are mounted eccentrically on shafts 21 which are also driven by the endless chain. When grading potatoes, chats fall through the part 12 to receptacle, and seed potatoes fall through the part 13 to a conveyer 24 which carries them to an inspection table 25 comprising rollers 26 similar to the cleaning roller 20. The table has a partition 27 and deflector 29 so that the seed potatoes are delivered to one side of the table and the ware potatoes, which pass over the part 13, are fed to the other side. The grading machine is supported on wheels having cranked axles whereby the slope of the grader may be adjusted. The elevator is hinged at 33 to the machine frame so that it can be swivelled to lie above the grader table. The inspection table 25 is also removably hinged to the frame so that it can be stored in a vertical position.

    • 950,605. Weighing apparatus. J. M. REEKIE. Sept. 18, 1961 [June 21, 1960], No.21731/60. Heading G1W. Apparatus for dispensing given weights of materials, e.g. grain, into a bag or other container carried on a weighing platform or by a steelyard comprises a hopper 1 adapted to be closed by a vertically slidable shutter 2 which is held in raised position by a latch 5 mounted on a horizontal cross-bar 8 which latter is provided at one end with an abutment 9 adapted to be actuated to release the latch by a lever arm 10 which is pivotably mounted on the hopper at 11 and is actuated by a rod 12 connected with the weighing platform or the steelyard. The effective length of the rod 12, shown connected to a part 7 of the weighing platform, is adjustable. By means of a handle 19 the shutter 2 is moved upwards against the action of a spring 4 and the latch 5 is engaged with a notch 8 in a rod 16 attached to the shutter 2. The grain then leaves by the outlet 3 and when the required weight has entered the bag the rod 12 has descended far enough to pivot the arm 10 so that its end strikes the abutment 9 and the latch 5 disengages and the shutter 2 cuts off the discharge. A weight 13 also provides adjustment.
