    • Pilot signal transmission sequences and methods for use in a multi-sector cell. Pilots in different sectors are transmitted at different known power levels. In adjacent sectors a pilot is transmitted while no pilot is transmitted in the adjoining sector. This represents transmission of a NULL pilot signal. A cell NULL is also supported in which NULL pilots are transmitted in each sector of a cell at the same time. Multiple pilot signal measurements are made. At least two channel quality indicator values are generated from measurements corresponding to at least two pilot signals of different power levels. The two values are transmitted back to the base station which uses both values to determine the transmit power requited to achieve a desired SNR at the wireless terminal. The wireless terminal also reports information indicating its location to a sector boundary.

    • The present invention involves apparatus and methods to perform wireless terminal transmission power control. The invention uses novel and highly efficient methods to: convey power control information, specify power control level adjustments, recognize power control information, limit interference in the power control signaling, and recognize corrupted power control signaling, thus conserving wireless terminal energy and minimizing power control signaling and associated bandwidth. Base stations send analog power control command signals, with a continuous range of control levels, to wireless terminals for transmission power adjustments. Power control signals include two components which can be used to convey information, e.g., power control commands, signal quality, device identity information. For zero power adjustment, the control component signal is not transmitted. For a non-zero adjustment, power control signals are sent using control ranges and limits, known to the base station and wireless terminal, with the scaling adjusted or synchronized based upon feedback information.

    • A system and method for reading data to and writing data from multi-level (M-ary) partial response channels uses a trellis coder to encode an input bit stream sequence into a stream of multi-level data symbols. The data symbols are written to the partial response channel using any of a number of techniques. Preferably, the trellis coder anticipates the modulation transfer function of the partial response channel in encoding the data. Because the partial response channel has its own transfer function, the relationship between the data read from the channel and the actual input data bits is a function not only of the data encoder but also of the partial response channel. Therefore, a decoder specification used to implement the decoder takes into account the effect of the trellis encoder as well as the effect of the partial response channel.
