    • 686,340. Potato harvesters. ROSS, J. A. June 14, 1951 [Aug. 25, 1950]. No. 21110/50. Class 6 (iii). A potato harvesting machine has an elevator for elevating the potatoes as they are lifted from the ground, a receptacle into which the potatoes are delivered, and means driven by a ground wheel of the machine for automatically moving a movable bottom of the receptacle at predetermined intervals so as to deposit the potatoes in heaps on the ground. The machine shown comprises a digging share 3, an elevator 4 and conveyer 5 both of the chain-link type, and a receptacle 6 having a hinged bottom 7. The elevator is driven, through a belt drive 13, by a shaft 8 which in turn is driven by the power take off shaft of the tractor to which the harvester is coupled. As the machine progresses, the potatoes dug by the share are conveyed to the receptacle, and at the same time a sprocket 26 on the axle 25 of the land wheels 24 drives a shaft 32 carrying a cam 30. A pawl and ratchet device 29, 31 on the driving sprocket 28 for the cam ensures that the cam can rotate in one direction only. A cam follower 35 is mounted on a weighted arm 37 pivoted at 37b, the arm being connected by links 39, 40, gears 41, 42a, chain wheel 44, chain 45, rod 46 and an inverted U-frame 50 to the pivot of the receptacle bottom 7. The contour of the cam is such that a suitable pivoting motion is imparted to the arm 37 and thus to the bottom 7 to discharge the contents of the receptacle on to the ground at the required intervals. A scraper 51 is actuated by links as shown from the frame 50 to dislodge any earth adhering to the bottom 7 when the latter swings about its pivot.

    • 829,461. Root-crop harvesters. ROSS, J. A. Aug. 27, 1958 [Aug. 28, 1957], No. 27133/57. Class 6(3). A root-crop harvester is provided with a broad-rimmed ground-wheel 2 having internal circumferential pockets 10, a disc-coulter 18 being rotated in a horizontal plane near the lowest point of the wheel, the coulter having a convex central part 19 by which each root, after being tailed, is swept into the lowermost wheel-pocket to be carried around thereby and discharged on to a conveyer 22 delivering to a receptacle (not shown). The wheel 2 is similar to that described in Specification 3872/14 and is mounted in a frame 1 supported on a forward caster-wheel 4 and a side-wheel in addition to the wheel 2. The conveyer comprises slats 23 attached to an endless chain 24 driven by a shaft 26 connected to the tractor or by the side ground-wheel. The coulter is carried on a frame 15 pivotally suspended from the main-frame 1 and resting on a skid 16. The frame 15 includes a guide 20 partially surrounding the coulter to impel the tailed roots into the wheel 2.
