    • A magneto-optical read/write device having a radiation detection system which includes two radiation-sensitive detectors the outputs of which are connected via DC coupled current-to-voltage converters to an input of an adder circuit and an input of a subtracter circuit to obtain a sum signal and a difference signal. The sum signal on the output of the adder circuit is coupled to an input of a selection circuit via a capacitive coupling. The difference signal on the output of the subtracter circuit is coupled to another input of the selection circuit. The output of the selection circuit is coupled to a signal processing circuit via another capacitive coupling. The device is particularly suited for use with a magneto-optical record carrier having sector headers with a pre-arranged pit structure. When information areas between the sector headers are recorded and erased, the device maintains the intensity level at a constant read level during scanning of the sector headers and avoids production of undesired transition phenomena at the output of the selection circuit.

    • A method for recording audio information on a record carrier, typically a bitstream signal on an optical disc, is disclosed. In the method the audio information is encoded to compressed audio data having a variable bitrate, in particular using lossless compression. The compressed audio data is recorded at a transfer speed which is controlled in dependence on the variable bitrate. A transfer speed profile (53, 54, 55) is determined for items of audio information, e.g. for each track on a CD, in which profile the average transfer speed is higher than an average transfer speed minimally required to transfer the compressed audio data of said item. Stuffing data is added to the compressed audio data according to the transfer speed profile, and transfer speed profile information is recorded on the record carrier for enabling playback at a transfer speed as indicated by the transfer speed profile information. Also a recording device, a record carrier and a playback device are disclosed.

A reliable tracking error signal based on time differences between detector signals, is obtained for high-density recording by comparing digitized signals of the detectors with a delayed signal Td generated by a delay unit and based on the digitized signals. The time differences between the detector signals result in length differences between pulses in the comparing signals A and B, which pulses have a nominal length of Td. The comparing signals A and B are low-pass filtered and combined to generate the tracking error signal TE.
