    • Semiconductor device processing and methods for dicing a semiconductor wafer into a plurality of individual dies that can have back surface metallization are described. The methods comprise providing a wafer with pre-diced streets in the wafer's front surface, applying a sidewall masking mechanism to the front surface of the wafer so as to substantially fill the pre-diced streets, thinning the back surface of the wafer so as to dice the wafer (e.g., by grinding, etching, or both) and expose a portion of the sidewall masking mechanism from the back surface of the wafer, and applying a material, such as metal, to the back surface of the diced wafer. These methods can prevent the metal from being deposited on die sidewalls and may allow the separation of individual dies without causing the metal to peel from the back surface of one or more adjacent dies. Other embodiments are also described.

    • A file system watcher in the presence of different file systems to allow synchronization of replicated files distributed among different file systems without compromising the features of each file system is described. To synchronize the distributed replications, a platform independent synchronization manager creates a file system watcher for each file system associated with a replication of the file. The file system watcher monitors each object for events affecting the object or the object's constituent files, such as creation, deletion, change and rename. Notifications are sent to the synchronization manager, which consolidates the modifications and updates a locally stored replication, if necessary. The synchronization manager then sends a notification of an update to other synchronization managers for replications of the distributed file or folder. Synchronization is complete when the nonconforming synchronization managers acquire a replication of the locally stored replication and update their respective objects.

    • Multicasting and telephony call signaling are combined to perform multicast call signaling. Several IP endpoints in a packetized network subscribe to a multicast group. A telephony call setup request is then sent on a multicast address to each of the subscribing endpoints in the telephony multicast group. When an originating endpoint transmits a telephony call setup request using the multicast address, the network replicates and transmits the telephony call setup request to each of the subscribing endpoints belonging to the telephony multicast group associated with that multicast address. When the setup request reaches the subscribing endpoints, each endpoint sends an alert signal using the multicast address to indicate the presence of a telephony device at that endpoint. Telephony devices at each of the subscribing endpoints can then begin notifying a user of the incoming call. When a response to the telephony call setup request is initiated by one of the telephony devices, a connect signal is transmitted from a responding endpoint using multicast address. A connection is then established between the originating endpoint and the responding endpoint. The multicast address or a point to point connection can be used to carry the voice and/or video data in addition to the signaling data once the connection is established.
