    • 401,713. Automatic regulation ; synchronous alternators. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., MESSENT, J. S., and SUTTON, C. C., Falcon Works, Loughborough. May 13, 1932, No. 13812. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv).] The excitation 2 of an alternating-current generator 1 is supplied from an exciter 3 provided with " rectifier compounding " 8 wherein a compounding field is supplied from a current transformer 5, 7 on the output of the machine 1 through a full wave copper oxide rectifier 6, a correcting effect, tending to reduce the magnetisation of the field, being provided by a winding 9 the current through which is regulated in accordance with the power input to the generator. The field 9 may be self-excited from the exciter and its current controlled by a resistance 10 operated by an arm 12 connected to a part of the governor of the prime mover driving the alternator, which moves in accordance with the power developed by the prime mover. As applied to an oil pressure relay governing system on a reaction water turbine driving the alternator the arm 12 may be connected to the mechanism by which the governor controlled relay moves the guide vanes of the turbine. Where the speed of the shaft is a function of the power input to or output of the machine, the regulation may be obtained from a centrifugal device driven thereby, or alternatively from a series resonant electrical circuit connected across the alternator terminals in series with a bridge connected copper-oxide rectifier which supplies a bucking winding on the exciter. Where the alternator is driven by a D.C or A.C motor the motor current, rectified where necessary, may bo passed through the bucking winding on the exciter.

    • 419,564. Electromagnetic switches. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and MESSENT, J. S., Falcon Works, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Dec. 2, 1933, No. 33935. [Class 38 (v).] In order to ensure that a relay shall be operated correctly with small changes in the applied voltage a baretter is connected in series with a capacity or reactance across the circuit carrying the actuating voltage to fluctuation of which the relay is intended to respond, the relay magnet coil being connected in parallel with the baretter. As shown the baretter 4, which may consist of an iron wire resistance in a hydrogen atmosphere, is placed in series with a condenser 5 across the supply, the energizing winding 2 of the relay being shunted across the baretter terminals. The automatic variation of the resistance of the baretter thus causes relatively large changes in the voltage across the relay 2 with relatively small changes in voltage in the supply circuit thus making the relay extremely sensitive to variations of voltage in the supply. A resistance 3 is included in the shunt circuit containing the relay winding to compensate for the inductance in the winding itself or alternatively this may be effected by feeding the relay coil in the shunt circuit through a copperoxide rectifier bridge (Fig. 4, not shown). Instead of a condenser a reactance may be employed in series with the baretter so that the voltages across the baretter and across the series impedance are approximately in quadrature.
