    • A dual stage hybrid inflation device includes a pressure switch that prevents the second stage pyrotechnic gas generator from being initiated when the additional heat and gas would overpressurize the first stage pressure vessel. As the pressurized gas stored in the first stage pressure vessel escapes the first stage pressure vessel, the pressure in the first stage pressure vessel drops. If the pressure in the first stage pressure vessel drops below the threshold pressure of the pressure switch, the pressure switch closes allowing the voltage signal to reach the pyrotechnic gas generator thereby initiating the second stage gas source. In an alternative embodiment, the pressure transducer is replaced by a pressure transducer or a temperature transducer and timing circuit. By delaying the initiation of the second stage gas source until after the pressure in the first stage pressure vessel has dropped below the threshold level, the appropriate augmentation of the compressed first stage gas can be realized without the necessity of designing the first stage pressure vessel to withstand initiation of the pyrotechnic gas generator under maximum inflation pressure conditions.

    • A thermobaric explosive composition is provided that includes coated fuel particle, a nitramine, and binder. The coated fuel particles preferably have a magnesium core and an aluminum coating. Upon detonation, the nitramine disperses the coated fuel particles over a blast area during a first overpressure stage. The aluminum coating of the fuel particles has a thickness selected to provide an amount of aluminum that is stoichiometrically less than an amount of ambient-air oxygen available in the blast area for aerobic combustion with the aluminum during the first overpressure stage. Once exposed, the magnesium cores may combust to increase the impulse generated in the first overpressure stage. Also provided are articles of manufacture and related methods.

    • The disclosed invention is an effective detonating cord which does not ignite combustible materials adjacent and exterior to the cord upon detonation. The cord in one of its broadest aspects comprises a core of high explosive coated with a composition extrudable around the core at safe temperatures and comprising a halogenated linear polymer with sufficient halogenation to prevent ignition of combustible materials adjacent and exterior to the cord upon detonation. The core preferably contains pentaerythritol tetranitrate and the preferred polymer is substantially amorphous chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) having about 25 to 50 weight percent chlorine. The coating composition frequently also includes synergistic agents known in the flame retardant arts such as antimony trioxide which enhance the flash-suppressing qualities of the coating, plasticizers such as polyethylene polymers and other materials such as extrusion aids. The coating composition can easily be extruded around the PETN core at safe temperatures to provide a thin but effective flash-suppressing coating for the cord. The resulting cord can effectively be detonated and is flexible so that the cords can be tied together to form a branched cord so as to initiate several high explosive charges at once.
