摘要： An acetabular component (10) for a hip prosthesis. The component comprises an outer shell (11) of substantially hemispherical shape, the radius of which may be increased at least in its peripheral region, and an inner non-compressible shell (12) of substantially hemispherical shape which has an outer radius slightly greater than the initial inner radius of the outer shell (11). Means, such as slots (16) in the outer shell (11) and pins (17) projecting radially from inner shell (12), to enable the inner shell (12) to be held firmly nested within the outer shell (11) and to thereby expand at least the peripheral region of the outer shell (11). In use the expansion of the outer shell (11) urges it into firm engagement with the bone (14) surrounding a suitable cavity which has been reamed in the pelvic bone.

摘要： An improved method and apparatus for extracting and handling samples for S/TEM analysis. Preferred embodiments of the present invention make use of a micromanipulator and a hollow microprobe probe using vacuum pressure to adhere the microprobe tip to the sample. By applying a small vacuum pressure to the lamella through the microprobe tip, the lamella can be held more securely and its placement controlled more accurately than by using electrostatic force alone. By using a probe having a beveled tip and which can also be rotated around its long axis, the extracted sample can be placed down flat on a sample holder. This allows sample placement and orientation to be precisely controlled, thus greatly increasing predictability of analysis and throughput.

[Also in Group X] In a rack-and-ratchet jack mounted on a strut which may be wedged between a pair of opposed surfaces, e.g. a mine roof and floor, to form a reaction member, the jack is mounted on the strut for rotary movement about the longitudinal axis of the rack bar. The jack comprises a rack 23 slidable through a housing 21 by a lever 28 pivoted at 27 to a link 26 which is pivoted at 25 to the housing; a pair of spring- pressed pawls (not shown) being provided in the casing to sustain the load whilst the pin 29 is disengaged from the rack teeth. A member 34 is provided to render the pawls inoperative. A cylindrical portion 19 on the housing 21 is rotatably mounted between a pair of half bearing members 16, 17 on the floor engaging foot 11 and flanges 22 on the portion 19 prevent it moving axially. The load-engaging head 48 is mounted on the rack for universal movement about axes 50, 52. Pivoted to the housing at 14 is a tubular member 13 provided with pairs of holes 39 co-operating with a pin 40 which adjustably supports a rod 12 provided with a roof-engaging head 42, sliding movement of the rod in the tube being limited by a pin 46 engaging a slot (not shown) in the rod. The strut 12, 13 may be wedged between a pair of horizontal surfaces instead of the roof and floor.

[Class 107] An apparatus for applying liquid surface dressings to roads and tracks comprises a cauldron 11 mounted on a chassis 10 the liquid being pumped from the cauldron through a control valve 13 and conduit 16 to a spray pipe 17. The pump 15 is driven from a road wheel 23 through a gear box 21. Any excess liquid is returned to the cauldron by way of the valve-controlled conduit 20. Spaced along the spray pipe 17 are a number of valve chambers 26 each having a valve body 32 and a tapered plug 36, passages 47 and 39 extending through them respectively. Operation of the linkage 44, 48 will align these passages so that the liquid may escape from the pipe 17 to the road. Mounted behind the spray pipes are a series of brooms 24 which work the liquid into the road. In a modification, the brushes may be mounted on a 'separate chassis coupled behind the first chassis. The chassis may be either towed or one may be self-propelled. Specification 347,759 is referred to.

[Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The method of starting a discharge lamp consisting in including in series with it a choke which also acts as an electromagnet to operate a switch which breaks a heating-circuit for the electrodes including the choke is applied to lamps in which the electrodes are connected in series so as to be both heated for starting by the current, this necessitates enclosing the switch in an envelope which does not contain air, it may be exhausted or contain oil or a'neutral gas. The invention is especially applicable to lamps of 1 metre and over in length. The switch may comprise a loose bar forming the armature of the choke magnet and bridging two mercury contacts or the armature may be carried on a leaf spring which carries or operates the contact. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement of the latter sort with provision for slight delay in the separation of the contacts. The armature 17 is mounted on a leaf spring 40 carrying a hook 19 arranged to engage a wire 22 after the armature has moved a certain distance. The wire 22 is mounted on a leaf spring 21 and makes contact with a wire 25.
