    • A rotatable chuck workpiece for a power driven threading machine is disclosed comprising a tubular spindle having front and rear ends and front and rear workpiece engaging jaws respectively at the front and rear ends. Each front jaw is connected to a corresponding rear jaw by a rod to which the jaws are rigidly attached, and the rods are mounted on the exterior of the spindle for rotation therewith and for pivotal movement relative thereto. A drive plate at the front end of the spindle is mounted coaxially thereon for pivotal movement relative to the spindle and is provided with drive pins interengaging with slots in the front jaws, whereby pivotal movement of the drive plate in opposite directions imparts pivotal movement of the front jaws radially inwardly and outwardly of the spindle axis. The front jaws and the rods to which they are attached provide the only driving connection between the drive plate and the rear jaws, whereby pivotal displacement of the front jaws imparts corresponding pivotal displacement to the rear jaws. Centering finger components are mounted on each of the front and rear jaws and operate to center a workpiece in the spindle relative to the spindle axis during pivotal movement of the jaws radially inwardly of the spindle.

    • A transmission is disclosed for rotating the work supporting chuck assembly of a power driven threading machine at low and high speeds. The transmission includes a sun gear, a ring gear coaxial with the sun gear and axially shiftable between first and second positions relative to the sun gear and to a fixed clutch component, and a plurality of planet gears between the sun gear and ring gear. The sun gear is motor driven to provide the transmission input, and the planet gears are connected to and drive an output sprocket wheel drivingly connected to the chuck assembly. The first position of the ring gear provides clutched interengagement thereof with the sun gear for rotation therewith, whereby the planet gears rotate therewith to rotate the output sprocket wheel at a first speed equal to the speed of rotation of the sun gear. The second position of the ring gear provides for clutched engagement thereof with the fixed clutch component such that the sun gear rotates the planet gears relative to the ring gear, whereby the output sprocket wheel is driven at a second speed which is less than the speed of rotation of the sun gear. The ring gear is axially shifted between its first and second positions through a yoke mechanism which includes high speed and low speed springs by which the clutched engagement of the ring gear with the sun gear is achieved with a first biasing force and the clutched engagement between the ring gear and fixed clutch component is achieved with a second biasing force which is greater than the first force.

    • A base for supporting a rotatable spindle shaft and chuck assembly of a motor driven threading machine for rotation about a spindle axis is comprised of axially spaced apart upright support members transverse to the spindle axis and rigidly interconnected by means of a torque tube having opposite ends welded thereto. The spindle shaft, which carries chuck units on opposite ends thereof, extends through the torque tube and is rotatably supported by bearings adjacent the upright support members. A pair of support rails extend through openings therefor in the support members and have ends extending radially outwardly from one of the support members to provide a cantilever support arrangement for the tooling carriage of the threading machine. Additionally, the support members, portions of the support rails therebetween, and the torque tube facilitate the mounting of drive motor and gear box units for the machine.

    • A rotatable chuck for supporting a plastic coated workpiece in a power driven threading machine is disclosed comprising workpiece engaging jaws mounted on the machine spindle for rotation therewith and for pivotal movement relative thereto radially inwardly and outwardly of the spindle axis. Each jaw pivotally supports an insert holder provided with a pair of inserts for engaging the outer surface of the workpiece. Each of the insert holders pivotally supports a centering link associated with an adjacent jaw so as to be actuated in response to pivotal displacement of the jaws radially inwardly of the spindle axis to control the attitude of the insert holders so that the inserts are directed radially inwardly of the spindle axis to assure a uniform gripping action by the two inserts of each holder upon engagement with the workpiece. The centering links also displace the workpiece to a centered position coaxial with the spindle axis during inward displacement of the jaws.
