    • 7524. Jackson, J. P. April 24. Stoppers.-Relates to the stoppering of bottles containing sterilized milk &c. Various forms of stopper and bottle neck are described, all of which are adapted to permit the escape of the hot air &c. from the bottle during the process of sterilizing, and thereafter to close the bottle hermetically, with more or less of an internal vacuum. In one arrangement, the neck of the bottle is ground or polished horizontally at the mouth, and is closed by a rubber disc a or b, Fig. 2, placed loosely on the month, or held thereon by means of a clamp such as B, Fig. 6. In another form, the disc has a conical plug or projection adapted to enter the mouth of the bottle. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the mouth f of the bottle is recessed to receive the disc. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the cap or hood b is adapted to be stretched over the mouth of the bottle, and is formed with perforations h to permit the escape of the gases &c. In a modification, the cap or hood has an opening at the top, which is closed by the external pressure after the sterilizing is completed, or the top may be turned down along the side of the neck and held by a rubber band. In the form shown in Fig. 7, a rubber teat or nipple t is fitted on the neck, and a hood or cone i is placed over the neck and secured by a rubber band b, which permits the escape of the gases. In the form shown in Fig. 8, a stopper b of china or glass is provided with a washer w. This form may be secured to the neck by a wire bail, or by a bail and lever. Fig. 10 shows a screw stopper formed with a lateral groove s, which permits the gases to escape past the packing-washer. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the neck of the bottle is formed with a vent passage h, which is closed by the rubber band j. In the form shown in Fig. 12, the metal disc d has a central nipple, and is held against the packing-washer w by the screw collar s. In this form, the nipple is closed by a pair of pincers when the sterilizing process is finished.

    • 7738. Jackson, J. P. April 3. Corking.--Bottles filled with beer &c., are fed by hand into a machine, and automatically corked. The bottles are placed in cups in a circular table 3, and are raised in turn by a platform 8, on a vertical spindle 7, against a monthpiece 9, and are corked by a plunger 6. The bottle rest is supported during the corking by a wedge 12, which descends and holds the serrated arm 11 of a lever 10 attached to the spindle 7. The machine is driven from a shaft 19, which gears into a shaft 13 by worm-wheel or toothed gearing. The table 3 is given an intermittent motion from the shaft 13, by a Geneva-stop mechanism, comprising a crank 14 with a pin 15, which engages with slots 17 on a wheel attached to the spindles on which the table is mounted. The plunger 6 is actuated by an eccentric 22, and the bottle rest is actuated by a cam 21 on the shaft 13. The corks may be fed by hand into holes in a circular disc, which revolves like the bottle table, and delivers one cork at a time into the mouthpiece of the machine. An overhead self-feeding mechanism may be provided, in which the corks are thrown into a hopper, and pass down a tube to the mouthpiece at the time when the plunger descends.
