    • 385,495. Signal &c. lamps. COOKE, TROUGHTON, & SIMMS, Ltd., LINN, J. D., and TAYLOR, E. W., Buckingham Works, York. April 1, 1932, No. 9431. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv).] In a railway signal or like lamp the socket of an electric lamp bulb 16 is .directed towards a Mangin lens-mirror 13 which constitutes the entire reflecting surface employed behind the bulb, the bulb-holder 11 projecting through an aperture in the mirror, and a portion 17 of the bulb remote from the mirror is silvered. The silvering preferably is in the form of a circular band of sufficient width to reflect light on to the whole of the exposed concave surface of the mirror. The holder 11 is adjustable axially by means of nuts 12 engaging the ends of a cylindrical bush 7 having a flange 8 up against which the mirror is secured by a. nut 14 and leather or like resilient washers 15. The bush is secured within a central aperture 6 in a boss 5 formed on the back-plate 1 of the lamp casing by means of a nut 9 and a washer 10, the boss 5, flange 8 and washer 10 having contacting surfaces which are concentric and spherically machined. The latter permit the mirror and bulb to be adjusted with respect to the lamp casing and facilitate the use of a peep-sight tube when inserted into the bush after removal of the holder 11.

    • 354,764. Engraving-machines. COOKE, TROUGHTON, & SIMMS, Ltd. and LINN, J. D., Buckingham Works, York. May 12, 1930, No. 14590. [Class 100 (ii).] In an engraving-machine of the type in which a controlling member is guided in a desired path and operates a cutting tool by means of a pantograph or like linkage, the motion of the controlling member is determined in one direction by a rotary copy cam device and in a direction at, and in a plane at, right-angles thereto by a groove or its equivalent in or on the cam surface, the path of each groove lying to one side or other of a mean line. The mechanism enables a series of engraving operations to be performed. A rotating tool 1 is carried by a boss 6 on a pivoted frame 3 and is held up to its work by a pivoted lever 10 one end of which rests on a cam 22 rotated in synchronism with the work-holding table 7 whereby the tool is allowed to move away from the work-table during a portion of the rotation thereof. Coupled to the pivoted frame is a pantograph lever system the pointer 4 of which is adapted to traverse a cam member 5 rotationally and slidably mounted on a shaft 12 ; the pointer by reason of the cam form moves to and fro radially with respect to the shaft 12 and by reason of the grooves 16 oscillates about a mean position parallel to the shaft 12. The drive for the cam member is by means of pinion 15 in engagement with a long pinion 14 on a shaft 13 which is geared to the main shaft 20 from which is also taken the drive 25 .. 28 for the work-table 7. The engraving of each character is accomplished during a single revolution of the copy cam but the actual engraving operation takes place during only three-quarters of such revolution, the tool being lifted during the idle quarter revolution. During the idle portion the transfer of the completed work-piece and introduction of the next work-piece of the series is effected. In a modification the copy cam may be made up of a series of individual cams placed side by side. The shaft has an extension on which is carried a non-rotating collar 50 which according to its longitudinal position will engage with one or other of a series of pegs 49 fitted into holes 48 on a cylinder which is adapted to be rotated in steps by gearing 34 from the copy cam shaft. By suitable disposition of these pegs the sequence in which the individual cams are used may be selected.

    • 266,226. Wilson, J. S., Linn, J. D., and Taylor, E. W. Aug. 31, 1926. Indicating, optical devices for.-A device for determining the mean reading of two scales or scale images disposed adjacent to one another comprises a translucent diagonal scale displaceably mounted relatively to the main scales and provided with a reading index line or lines extending from the zero indication of the scale and parallel to the main indications. The diagonal scale is graduated so that a minute division on the scale subtends two minutes on the main scales; it is marked or engraved on a sheet of glass 1, Fig. 1, mounted in an eye-piece frame 2 and adjustable by means of a knob 3. As shown in Fig. 2, the diagonal scale is constituted by lines 8 - - 10 with reading index lines 11 at one end which can be brought into coincidence with the nearest coarse graduation oi the projected main scales 4 or 5. The true mean reading is obtained on the diagonal scale by setting the actual or virtual index 7 to the left of the lines 11 and by reading to the lower scale division immediately to the left of the index 7. The diagonal scale may be twice the length of any two coarse graduations to avoid errors in reading and it may be displaceably mounted in two directions at right angles so as to bring it to the position shown in Fig. 8 thereby facilitating the reading of the minute divisions. The diagonal scale may take the form of a single inclined line 11, Fig. 9, subdivided by lines 12. In use with circular main scales the lines 10 of the diagonal scale will not be parallel but will radiate in accordance with the curvature of the main scales.
