    • 1,111,228. Friction gearing. J. A. BELL and G. H. GALLEY. 15 Nov., 1966 [17 Nov., 1965], No. 48779/66. Heading F2Q. In a film transport mechanism for a teaching machine, including a drum 5 open at one end and coupled to a film-engaging sprocket (not shown), momentary energization of a solenoid 13 moves a link 11 to bring a friction wheel 10, supported by a swing-link 7 and driven by a reversible motor (not shown) via a belt and pulley 14, into driving contact with one surface of the drum to rotate the latter, a pinch wheel 15 on the link 11 engaging the other drum surface to maintain said driving contact until the pinch wheel drops into an axial slot 6 in the drum to allow friction wheel 10 to cease contacting the drum. The spacing of slots 6 is chosen so that each driving step moves the film one frame. The drive direction may be controlled by a photo-electric circuit reading from the film. The solenoid 13 may be controlled by a telephone dial which feeds pulses to the solenoid, the step time of the mechanism being less than the time between pulses. For continuous drive for rewinding, solenoid 13 is energized continuously. In a modification, the friction wheel and pinch wheel are supported by parallel links, the solenoid acting on a vertical link pivoted to the parallel links intermediate their ends. A spring acting on the upper link urges the friction wheel towards its disengaged position.

    • An automatic analytical and control apparatus for the continuous or intermittent testing of mixtures having components which migrate under the influence of a force field, and which is suitable for the retroactive control of chemical processes, comprises a cell 1 into which a solution, e.g. of glucose is deionized water, is fed through a plurality of inlets 2. This solution has been so modified in 3 as to provide a series of solutions have a systematically varying density, pH or conductivity gradient. Continuous laminar flow is set up so that there is a continuous gradient from top to bottom of the cell. Samples of test solutions or suspensions from line 17 are fed in from duct 20 and are split into the vertical components by the gravitational or electrical field. If desired, these samples may be mixed in 19, with reagents or solvents which alter the mobility of the components before entering the cell. Any desired component of the sample is monitored by means of tube 21 which leads to measuring device 22, which in turn is used to control mixing valve 16 which governs the relative amounts of materials A and B entering line 17. The particular embodiment shown illustrates a mechanically unsupported electro-phoretic cell having electrodes 14 in compartments separated from the main body of the cell by semi-permeable membranes 9 and 10. Electrolyte from a reservoir 12 is circulate through the electrode compartments.
