Opening tops for road vehicles comprise crossmembers carrying the hood fabric adapted to run on cant rails, the front cross-member having toothed wheels engaging racks on the cant rails. The cant rails a, Fig. 2, are curved downwards at the rear and are provided with a rib k, Fig. 4, adapted to be embraced by rollers carried by the cross-members e by means of a spring m, a housing n being provided. The rear cross-member f is carried by a pair of arms g pivoted to the body. Rails p housed in recesses o in the cant rails are engaged by toothed wheels q, Fig. 6, carried by the front cross-member by means of a spindle r, suitable means being provided for securing the front cross-member to the peak t carried by the wind-screen pillars. The folded hood fabric may lie behind the rear seat squab, and a cover may be arranged over the lowered hood, being attached to the squab and secured by turn-buttons &c. to the rear body panel.

Hoods.-The spindle described in the parent Specification for causing the cross-member, preferably the front one. to travel on the cant rails is operated by means of one or more coiled springs having one end secured to the spindle and the other end to the cross-member. When the hood or cover is retracted into the open position the springs are coiled up and cause or assist the cross-members to travel along the cant rails when released. As shown, the spindle j is provided with one or more springs anchored to the spindle and to the cross-member a and cause or assist the spindle j to rotate and by means of pinions and racks l cause. the crossmember a to travel along the runways d on the cant rails e by means of rollers c. In the case of a charabanc or similar vehicle the springs are mounted on the rear spindle to cause the rear cross-member to rise over the curved rear part of the cant-rail when the front cross-member is operated by any means.
