[Class 35.] For driving a sewing or other machine from an electric motor, a clutch member c is fixed externally of the motor casing d to the shaft a projecting unsupported beyond the casing, and a hollow shaft f is sleeved on the projecting end so as to be entirely supported thereon, the hollow shaft carrying a clutch member g for engaging the member c and a pulley h, and being associated with control means located adjacent the projecting shaft end mounted on or in connection with the motor. The clutch element g has a leather ring g for engagement with the element c and is formed with three pulleys h, h , h and a brake groove i. The control element comprises a bell-crank lever q pivoted on the forked end of a bracket m secured to and fitting snugly against the motor casing; one end of the lever carries an adjustable striking pin r for engagement with a plate l on the end of the hollow shaft l and the other end of the lever is connected by a link w to a pedal which when depressed releases a brake u and causes engagement of the clutch elements. When the pedal is released, a spring x moves the lever to relieve the pressure on the plate l and at the same time, the action of the brake on the V-shaped groove i causes the clutch element g to move away from the element c. Alternatively, a declutching spring may be provided and the bell crank lever may be influenced by a counter-weight device or by pneumatic means instead of by the spring x. The end pressure on the rotor shaft is taken up a thrust bearing, for example, by washers e. The Provisional Specification refers to an arrangement in which the bracket is provided with a plate adapted to be inserted between the bed plate or fastening lugs of the motor and the table on which the machine is mounted or slung ; also it is stated that the hollow shaft may be revolubly but axially connected to the lever.

Sewing. - machines; fe'ed by dogs. - The feed dog 7 is mounted on a carrier plate w having a slot x which receives a block y in which rotates an eccentric l to give the feed movements. The carrier w is mounted on a hollow stud t which is carried by a bar u mounted on an eccentric m, the rotation of which effects the lifting movements of the dog. The stud t carries a block s located in a vertical guideway r in a distancepiece n. The lifting-bar u has a hole 5 for a wick which lubricates the eccentric m and stud t from a sump formed by a small partition 4 in the end cap o. The eccentrics l, m are secured on the shaft d which drives a looper or hook.
